I like Zeppelin.

I just don't want to hear some ignorant idiot tell me they're on the level of the fukkin Stones because that's just plain stupid.

Actually agree - as much of a fan of Zep as I am / it’s apples and oranges.

1 group ruled a decade ago - Stones have been present in 5 of them.

Always been somewhat of a rivalry - but Stones admittedly have been able to hold on much longer and throughout personnel changes. Zep would have been done even before Bonham’s untimely death - would have been the ‘80 tour and then solo careers.

Individually - it’s hard to argue that each member of the Stones doesn’t exceed their counterpart in Zep. Richard’s/Page not exactly an even comparison - but Keith simply does so much more than Page outside of playing guitar. Bonzo/Watts is probably the most favorable to Zep - Bonzo inspired a generation of drummers and is on a Mt Rushmore of rock drummers- but Watts is vastly underrated. His understated style in the vein of Gene Krupa was crucial to the bands success. He wasn’t just a technically proficient drummer - he brought the missing piece to the puzzle.

When you're talking about levels of greatness, there really isn't anything that compares to the Stones.

They were part of the first wave of the British invasion, they changed everything that came after them, they literally define modern rock n roll.

They are the DEFINITIVE band.

They lasted the longest, had the greatest period of consecutively great albums in all of history, and define the genre itself.

This is in no form a criticism of Zep. It's just that the Stones are simply overwhelming. The longest lived band, with the biggest and greatest catalogue of songs, to go along with being the most versatile band ever musicially.

The Stones have covered every genre. Literally.

Blues , country, R & B, bluegrass, jazz, disco, funk, reggae, 80s new wave, punk, even rap lol etc etc.

Nothing compares to the Stones musically.

“See the little faggot with the earring and the makeup ~
Yeah buddy that's his own hair ~
That little faggot got his own jet airplane ~
That little faggot he's a millionaire” ~

I wonder what 80’s band they were referring to back in the day lol.

Heard a few variations of it from Knopfler over the years in interviews - but gist of it was he wrote the story after going into an appliance store in NYC and listening to a couple of sales kids complaining about MTV and the acts they were featuring.

It’s funny how he saw what a joke it was at the very start, wrote and song about it and managed to make it a huge hit in the very network.

I knew there had to be some kind of back story here, thanks for filling in the blank regarding one variation 👍
