if I die before my dog, please let me come back one last time to say goodbye. Let me sit beside him so he knows I did not leave him by choice. Let me kiss his head, hold his paw, and tell him, with every word I can, that he was the greatest love of my life.

Promise me you will care for him. Promise me he will have food, warmth, and kind hands. Promise me someone will tell him, in soft voices and gentle strokes, that he was loved and that I will be waiting for him on the other side.

When I return that one last time, let it be quiet and peaceful. Let the air be gentle. Let there be no hurry. Let our goodbye be full of thanks for the years we shared, for the small moments that were everything. I want him to feel safe, to know that he was never forgotten.

One day, when we are together again, it will be forever. Until then, keep him close, keep him warm, and tell him I loved him more than words can hold.
