I was working in sales back then while in college

A couple of Hispanic girls I knew were freaking out near me

I asked them what was going on? They told me Selena was murdered

I said who the hell is Selena??

They paused for a few seconds and said - she’s like the Mexican Madonna!!

Looking back I’ve always thought this was pretty funny. In the Tejano world she was as popular as Madonna

Mexican Madonna ? Meaning what - she’d be washed up by 30 - move to England suddenly develop a fake ass accent and try to convince us she can act when she has no ability whatsoever ?

Would she have been a pop star - probably no more than she became after her death. Actually likely got BIGGER after her death in the non-Hispanic market. Pop stardom generally only happens because a label WANTS it to happen. Record companies don’t want anyone with a favorable contract to get too big - they like nice and controllable acts - like the NFL likes to have 5 years control of draft picks. There’s a reason why those contract are 5 years for 1st rounders - because by 28 most guys are slowing down and within 3 years are done. Same with musicians - you sign a 5-6 record deal - first helps launch you - 2nd is your breakout - by 5 or 6 your at the peak and it’s nowhere but down from there and they know it.
