Winter is Coming but so is the World Cup!!!

The 2022 World Cup starts 11/20/22 with the host, Qatar, playing against Ecuador for Group A. Then on Monday we're going to start group stage matches with 12 Days of Soccer. Excluding Day 1 with (3) matches (the first match will be played on Sunday... Qatar v. Ecuador) all the remaining days will have (4) matches during group stage.



I'll try to give my breakdown of each group with one group per day. There are many sites with World Cup predictor contest, Bovada, Betonline, etc., and I highly recommend joining one or all of them so we can get extra funds for Christmas. Though the World Cup is being played November/December rather than in the summer, this shall be an exciting (4) weeks of pure entertaining and thrilling soccer action.

First up is Group A. Qatar stuck in as being the host but overall a pretty decent group. Netherlands will win this group but look for a possible draw, if not an outright upset, on day 1 with Senegal v. Netherlands. After that, I think Senegal will squeak in as runner-up.

Why World Cup betting is a guessing game for American bookmakers​

The World Cup is a massive betting event for European sportsbooks, but it's more of a guessing game for American bookmakers, especially this year.

According to FIFA, $155 billion was bet globally on the 2018 World Cup, which took place in its traditional summer slot in Russia. The United States men's national team did not qualify for the 2018 World Cup, and the betting on the tournament at Nevada sportsbooks was average. The U.S. men are back in the tournament this year, but other factors are tempering bookmakers' expectations.

"We're bullish, but have modest expectations," Karol Corcoran, general manager of FanDuel's online sportsbook, said of the World Cup, which kicks off Nov. 20 in Qatar.

It's the first World Cup to take place in the fall and right in the thick of a jam-packed sports month in the U.S. that features the NFL, NBA, NHL and college football and basketball. An eight-hour time difference from Qatar to the eastern U.S. also could hinder the betting on the World Cup.

"Soccer betting in general has increased year after year after year," Adam Pullen, assistant director of trading at Caesars Sportsbook, said. "I would expect the same thing to happen if this were a normal World Cup in the summer. But it's going up against football, NBA, hockey and college basketball."

Determining how much was bet on past World Cups and how much is bet on soccer overall with U.S. sportsbooks is challenging. The 2018 World Cup began just over a month after the U.S. Supreme Court released a decision that allowed all states to authorize sports betting. Only three states -- Delaware, Nevada and New Jersey -- were up and running when the 2018 tournament kicked off. More than 30 states could have legal betting markets when this year's tournament begins.

However, most state regulators do not track the soccer betting individually. Nevada, for example, includes soccer in an "other" category in its monthly revenue reports, with auto racing, golf, hockey and combat sports among others. Colorado's Division of Gaming does, however, trace the amount wagered on soccer. Last November, $11.2 million was bet on soccer with Colorado sportsbooks, comparable to the amount wagered on hockey during the month, but well behind the NFL, NBA and college football and basketball

John Murray, executive director of the SuperBook at Westgate Las Vegas, said the company's accounting team was disappointed by his November estimates on how much would be bet during the World Cup.


"I just told them that I don't know what kind of action we're going to get on World Cup games that are being played at two in the morning," Murray said. "And what I really don't know is how much of the action will be new and how much of it is going to be money that pulled out of what we would've done on football or basketball."

U.S. bookmakers are in agreement, though, that the USA-England match scheduled for Nov. 25, the day after Thanksgiving, should attract significant wagering. Murray said it has a chance to be the most-heavily-bet soccer match in the SuperBook's history, comparable to how much is bet on a primetime NFL game.

The United States can be found as long as 120-1 to win the World Cup at FanDuel, and patriotic betting appears to be in full effect. The U.S. has attracted twice as many bets to win the tournament as any other team at FanDuel.

USA has a really good midfield group, but I am worried our centerbacks will be vulnerable to the pace that all 3 opponents will bring and we have no good option at the 9 spot. Hope Headsterx is right in his prediction, but I have us finishing 4th.

No.....Miles Robinson is a huge miss as is Chris Richards. I think Zimmerman is a starter alongside Ream (or Long if the opponent...ie Wales..is a threat in the air). Tim Ream has been really good in the EPL and deserves to be in the team. Sands just hasn't had enough time with the team and I'm not sure CB is his best position.

Yeah, all the games between USA, Wales, and Iran can go either way.

I have Argentina being one of the teams (France is the other) reaching the World Cup Final. They shouldn't have any difficulties in this group. Mexico reminds me of USA where they'll reach round of 16 but always disappoint. Interesting, Poland is slightly favored to win this group at +525 than Mexico at +600, but Mexico to win WC is at 120-1 compared to Poland at 200-1.

The Champs are here! The defending World Cup champs are in Group D (“D” for defending.) France will win this group and the Cup as repeating champs which hasn’t occurred since Brazil in ‘62. They are loaded with players such as Mbappé (favorite player) and the Ballon d’Or winner Benzema!. Since Haaland (2nd fav player) and Norway are not in the World Cup, then one of the Frenchies will be the player with the most goals in WC (no bet). (But taking Group D will have the most goals in the group stage +500.). France is too fast on the wings and too talented and experienced.

For runner-up, Denmark can score and has a good defense. They have Höjbjerg and Eriksen who had beaten France twice this year. But the third time won’t happen in group stage.
