Looking to avoid this mess. Got a letter for jury duty in California next month. I think I got one in my 20s showed up and sent home
But I'm worried I'm going to get stuck this mess.

Tell them you know one of the people involved.

I saw a guy do this once. The judge told him to provide the name of his employer and the judge would call them. Everyone in the jury pool was like, "Oh shit".

Not sure how much work you want to put into this but, you can look up cases on the county/district court website and see which ones are around the same time as your jury summons. Briefly familiarize yourself with the cases, just a little, and when their voir dire the jury, you can say you already have opinions on the case because you know about it.
