Ozzy has that voice that the second you hear it - you know it’s Ozzy.

Much like Eddie Van Halen’s guitar - the SECOND you hear it, you know instantly who it is - and you instantly start rockin’…..

Ozzy and Lemmy - 2 voices you absolutely immediately recognize when you heard them as they were umm “unique”.

Always loved the story about how he became the voice of Sabbath. Can’t remember it exactly - but basically was along the lines of Tony knew Ozzy from school - and thought he was a bit of a prick. So when he Ozzy wanted to be a singer in his band - there was no chance in hell of that happening - at least until he found out Ozzy would be able to bring his own Marshall PA.

For a couple of kids Birmingham - money to buy gear was scarce and most bands made do with pretty low level stuff. A singer who came with a top shelf PA was a huge deal and Ozzy had one - so personal feelings aside - Ozzy was in. That PA was bought by Ozzy’s dad Jack - who despite being a very proper middle aged sort working to support a family as an electrical engineer - did all that he could to support his son.

Imagine being a teenage punk who consistently was getting into trouble and failing out of school - and telling your old man you want to be a singer - and your old man spends a small fortune helping you do just that - despite having no shared interest in your passion. That my friends is the unconditional support many musicians never see. 99.9% never get that level of support from family or those closest to them - but that lucky .1 do. Of those - again a vast majority will never make it beyond playing local bars and festivals - but a small percent actually make a record and get the chance to show how much that support meant.

We all should be so lucky to have had a champion like Jack Osborne in our corner as kids. Someone who not only encouraged us to chase a dream - but helped fund it.

Great post.

Ozzy's voice was unique and amazing.
I can only think of two others that had a voice you could recognize with 1 sound, Dylan and Tom Petty for me.

Not sure your musical tastes @phillyflyers - but if you’ve enjoyed any kind of hard rock or “metal” in the past, oh, 55 years - you have Ozzy to thank for it…..

Here's AI reply to your post:
You could reasonably argue that if the Rolling Stones helped pioneer modern hard rock, then they played an indirect but foundational role in the development of heavy metal—but with important qualifications.

The Argument:

Yes, the Rolling Stones helped define the attitude, sound, and aesthetic of hard rock in the 1960s—gritty guitar riffs, rebellious lyrics, blues-based songwriting, and a raw, aggressive performance style. These elements influenced the hard rock milieu from which heavy metal emerged.

Therefore:

  • If hard rock laid the foundation for heavy metal (which it did),
  • And the Stones were a key force in shaping early hard rock (which they were),
  • Then the Stones can be viewed as part of the larger musical lineage that ultimately gave rise to heavy metal.

I love all music - started for me with Elvis & the Big Band stuff with my parents, I’d take The Who over the Stones anyday WAAYYY more raw talent - Stones just copied James Brown - Mick even made a movie about it - but, you want to get into it - lay out your top 5 bands/songs - minus The Rolling Stones - that you listen to…..

Pete Townshend himself will tell you the Stones are the greatest band ever. He's said it numerous times already.

He knows.

Sorry, but if I was forming a band - speaking as someone who plays in a $#!TTY dive bar cover band - I would pick everyone from The Who over anyone in The Stones…..

That’s just my feelings - doesn’t have to be right or wrong…..
That must be why you're in a shit band.

The Who couldn't lick the sweat off the Stones balls and Townshend himself will be the first to admit it.
