But there is nothing there. Anyone ever experience this? It happens every so often to me![]()
Do you have any of these, Keith? The sensation that feels like a bug is crawling on your leg but nothing is there is known as formication. This is a type of paresthesia—an abnormal skin sensation such as tingling, itching, or pins and needles, which occurs without a physical cause. Formication is specifically the feeling of insects crawling on or under your skin, even though there are no bugs present.
Common causes of formication include:
Why does this happen?
- Medical conditions: Parkinson’s disease, fibromyalgia, diabetes, neuropathy, vitamin B12 or folate deficiency, thyroid disorders, and some infections.
- Mental health conditions: Anxiety, depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), psychosis, and other psychiatric disorders.
- Medication side effects: Some prescription drugs can trigger these sensations.
- Substance use or withdrawal: Cocaine, methamphetamines, alcohol, and opioid withdrawal are known triggers.
- Hormonal changes: Menopause can also cause formication.
Your brain sometimes misinterprets nerve signals from your skin, creating a false sensation of crawling. This can happen randomly, but if it becomes frequent or distressing, it may indicate an underlying medical or psychological issue.
What should you do?
Important: Avoid excessive scratching, as this can damage your skin and lead to infection.
- If this sensation is occasional and mild, it’s usually not a cause for concern.
- If it is persistent, severe, or accompanied by other symptoms (like itching, pain, or skin changes), or if you have a history of mental health or neurological issues, you should consult a healthcare provider to determine the underlying cause and appropriate treatment.
Basically, you're going through Cocaine withdrawal![]()
LOL.. Pero, Keith, seriously.., go and see a doctor.Genie I may have all of these ... except for the menopause.![]()
You wouldn't believe how long since I have seen a doctor.LOL.. Pero, Keith, seriously.., go and see a doctor.
I get the feeling that you're a health conscious guy. And for some reason, I always remember exactly your birth date, but not your age, Keith. How old are you at the end of the month? You wouldn't believe how long since I have seen a doctor.
It's hard to say Genie.I get the feeling that you're a health conscious guy. And for some reason, I always remember exactly your birth date, but not your age, Keith. How old are you at the end of the month?
Doubtful... JJ hasn't been to Maine in several years.Probably have a PARASITE
We will be very lucky if we reach your age and still manage to do all this stuff.I like to believe I am health conscious yes. I watch my diet try to get exercise though not nearly enough to be honest. I take no medications except allergy pills occasionally. No walkers , canes, always use the stairs, walk 2+ miles or more most days and live in the highest point of my city so it's mostly uphill. I need to start lifting weights though as have grown lazy since retiring. When I am in a crowd I walk faster than most around me except for children.
My biggest fear is if and when my mind starts to go.We will be very lucky if we reach your age and still manage to do all this stuff.
KR you won’t know when it goes. It’ll just be gone.My biggest fear is if and when my mind starts to go.
Great adviceKR you won’t know when it goes. It’ll just be gone.
Live life. Don’t worry about stuff that “might” happen.
