Got to seperate the musician/band from their fans.

A lot of these groups “images” are made up by the image of their fans. The Dead are a great example - musically, pretty diverse and actually pretty damn good…but think Dead and the mind immediately goes to the horde of dirty hippies following them (at least to music fans of a certain age)

U2 has “fans” ?? I thought it was just middle aged white people who were forced to buy a shitty album when they bought an iPhone ? Got to seperate U2 of the mid 80s vs the shitty version we’ve been given since the mid 90s - up until Zooropa they were tolerable and somewhat enjoyable…then Bono decided to be a world ambassador and became unbearable.

Journey/Chicago and whatever other ProgRock group you can name - again - the groups themselves not the issue - it’s the idiots who blindly follow.

A sure to be unpopular pick of mine - Eric Clapton. Dude has always been a Prima Dona - he was good for a short period and been riding the “legend” of his skills for 30 years now despite not being half the guitarist he was at one time. I get it - aging rock stars still want to earn - but at a point just kick back, enjoy retirement and doing one offs and having current musicians coming and worshiping you and asking you to sit in on a song on their current album.

Any current “country” singer from the bro-country movement…singing about the good old days of outlaw country. These candy asses would have been whooped senseless by anyone 50 years ago for posing as a country singer.

The Doors another great example - as are Zeppelin of bands where the “mystique” far exceeded the band - thanks to fans. Both musically great - but the whole hyped up story behind Morrison and Page is just annoying. Morrison was a crazy drunken singer - Page was a skinny white boy who liked to “impress” 13 year olds with his weird occult stuff - nothing more.

Springsteen does more than country - again, a lot depends on the era. Early Springsteen stuff very much about his life and what he saw in NJ - current stuff - yea, he is singing about growing up middle American (which he of course didn’t). He understands no one’s buying another song about NJ and alt-country has a massive following - so trying to stay relevant.

Jimmy Buffet fans are probably U2 fans too - same demographic. Went once many years ago to a show in Detroit - aside from the concession stands - I did not see a single black person in a crowd of 20k - being Detroit, that’s pretty damn hard to do. Middle aged - white and lots of disposable income. I’d sooner sit through a root canal than crowd like that.

Son of a multi millionaire who likes to act like he grew up poor in a trailer park.

Rose to mediocrity in the days of Vanilla Ice riding coattails on the novelty of white rap acts - and having the good fortune to not need to sign a shitty label deal - was able to stay independent.

Of course the rap thing began to fizzle and he suddenly remembered he was just a good ole boy raised in the affluent suburbs of Detroit on his families “farm” - so decided to get back to his roots and become a country star.

What’s not to love about his story or the dumbasses who buy it up and follow him like he actually lived that life he portrays? I mean - I’ll give him credit for being smart enough to stay independent - but let’s be honest, that’s likely more a result of his families team of attorneys. Then again - TSwift had a shit ton of family money AND industry exec dad and no one told her not to sign away her shit to the first label offering a few bucks.

Springsteen was overrated also as was Bon Jovi

I get Taylor Swift has sold massive amount of records, won awards, etc. but she’s just a social media marketing machine came at the right time, talent wise. She couldn’t make the top 100 women singers all time.
