What’s the purpose?
He's implementing tariffs on any country that has tariffs on the US goods. Unfortunately, the majority of steel imported comes from Canada and Mexico.

On Wednesday he will implement more tariffs. They are "new reciprocal tariffs", which look at matching other countries’ tariffs on US goods dollar-for-dollar.

I’m curious as to how this plays out for the auto industry.

Obviously - if the cost of raw materials goes up 25% - the cost are passed to consumers normally.

However - you have the big 3 sitting on TONS of autos right now - built and ready to sell. No tariff on those materials - but they can be sold at the new/higher price or if offered at the prior price point will look “cheap” next to cars from competitors who don’t have the luxury of having huge inventories to draw from.

Overall - the recession fears might be a bit overblown. IF Russia makes peace with Ukraine - that’s hopefully going to spark a rejuvenation of Europe and pull them out of their economic slump - if they pick up, it could help the US avoid a slide.

Stock market is getting way too tech heavy of late - bound to slide down a little. But earnings are best they have ever been - and again this is with economic slumps throughout Europe. Something has to give - either the market continues to go higher or earnings slow and it slumps HARD.

It’s really funny that Canada has the nerve to use the term “Retaliatory“ when I’ve been saying that we need to be using that word instead of ‘Reciprocal Tariff’

Because Trump’s tariffs are just that, retaliatory, to what Canada has been charging us all along and maybe people would understand that word and the whole thing better than Reciprocal

if someone smacks you first over & over again, and you finally get tired of it and smack them back, that’s called retaliation.

So Canada is being deceptive by wording it that way since they’ve been the aggressor all along…
