Second baseman Jose Altuve, the leader of the Astros' two World Series titles, has reached a five-year extension. Sources told ESPN that it's worth $125 million.

He’s their catalyst and main clutch player during their run the last 7 or 8 years but he’ll be 39 when the contract is up. These deals usually end badly.

But it’s only for $125 million, unlike several like Miggy and Pujols, etc, that were 3-4 times that, so probably not a bad deal.

I'm happy about this. The guy is full of energy. I think he will age well and continue to energize the team. Like you mention, the $125M seems to be chump change anymore in MLB compared to what others were getting.

Hopefully, he'll end career in Houston and follow it up with community work like Bagwell and Biggio..

Its funny because if you ask the Astros that cheated using the trash can and were called out, they all say everyone on the team was doing it except Altuve. He apparently wanted no part of it.

I've always respected Altuve for that.

Deserves it and glad to see him stick around.

As far as the whole cheating thing - another baseball double standard. So during the steroid era - guys called out people for corking bats and doctoring balls - but turned a blind eye to the roids.

Is knowing the pitch being thrown an advantage- slightly - you still have to make contact with it and not get an out. I mean it’s not as if guys were hitting .600 plus - they just managed to improve their contact ratio.
