That's what I was wondering too. The article said she settled out of court. I wonder if the lawyer didn't sue based upon the "malfunction", but instead sued based upon the fact that the malfunction caused the lady undue emotional distress.

Basically what they are saying is our machines aren't designed to pay out big prizes so there was a "malfunction" with the machine because it should never hit for that prize
