Imagine going from Mahomes/Reid to the Commanders mess
Because he will not become an HC while in Reid's shadow. Go somewhere like Washington where he will get full credit for the offensive improvement since Rivera is a defensive coach. It's also possible they made him some assurances that he is on the fast track to being their next HC since Rivera has had medical issues in the past. Commanders will also be aggressive about acquiring a QB whether through the draft or FA. Synder isn't pulling the strings anymore. You can do a lot worse than a WR group with Mclaurin and Dotson. Some guys also like a challenge, enter Demeco Ryans.

This is the only way he'll get a HC job basically. He was never going to get credit for KC's juggarnaut of an offense because he was always going to be in Andy Reid's shadow. Now he'll have full control of the offense in Washington and a direct path to the HC job if Rivera retires or is fired is my guess.

Yeah this

But still, it will probably backfire and the odds are against him succeeding elsewhere

Yeah, if he stays in KC and eventually becomes HC and wins, it will be because Andy Reid built a good team. If he stays and becomes HC and does poorly, well that's his fault then.

If he goes to Washington and becomes HC, he can't lose. If the team does poorly it's because he inherited a poor team. If it does well, then it has to be because he's a good coach.
