Yup, I believe the cloak of anonymity/the ability to use obviously fake usernames engenders the most vile comments ever. Like chimps flinging poop, I think maybe we have de-evolved even as technology becomes more pervasive.
Writing inflammatory comments and being rude or unkind, even hostile, is prevalent throughout the internet world. It's the new version of writing graffiti on a wall without the danger of being caught. There are no negative repercussions for expressing comments filled with hatred and abuse. I've found that to be more the case on sites like YouTube and Facebook, but Quora users are not immune to flinging their own poo, but at least Quora Moderators are quick to take action when a comment is reported as being against the BNBR policy.
It's disheartening. I do believe people act more politely in person, but that's probably just because of social convention. They know there would likely be swift ramifications if they were to be so abusive to others in real life.
