That is one ROUGH ass area of Winston - also a very odd neighborhood.

Primarily - low end (even by NC standards) with a lot of $600 a month rentals - primarily black - but it’s odd as there has been an influx of gays into that community - which of course you don’t see much of in Central NC outside of Greensboro.

Lived about 10 miles away and was in this area ALOT dealing with property owners and tenant issues.

When we moved - our biggest issue was the fact our assigned schools were Forsyth County - WS and not Kernersville (right on the line) - WS schools in general were rough vs good old suburban K-Vegas.

This is as bad as most any inner city school I’ve seen. Worse - a lot of the kids down there just simply feel they can do whatever the hell they want. Punks who don’t get called on their shit often enough. Guarantee if you pulled that shit another 30 miles West out in the country at a school - kid would have been knocked on his ass and missing a few teeth before the escorted him out of the school.

See my comments - agree it’s odd - especially knowing the area. Mask wearers in Forsyth ?? It’s “uncommon” - hell, you never saw that in the middle of COVID - seriously. Coming from the North first trip down right after lockdown - walked into a gas station and tossed on a mask not knowing how they were about the mandatory masking - learned quickly.

This is also an odd melting pot South of 40. Not far from the “nicer commercial area” but a very different feel from other cities in the state. Obviously you have nicer and rougher parts of town - but down there it felt like there was a very obvious line followed. Hispanic East - White West and Black South with high end living in the North.

I’m not saying I disagree - but at the same time - we need to be very careful which teachers we arm.

Let’s be honest - a lot of people become teachers - many quit for a variety of reasons - pay, job not being what they thought and poor administration.

At the same time - just like some people join the police force to bully people around - some become teachers become teachers for the wrong reasons. You really want one of these 40 year of losers roaming a hallway with a weapon trying to act tough to a bunch of teenagers ?

I’m fine with arming employees - but just needs to be some common sense screening done here too. Hell - in my day a student showing up with a gun in their vehicle meant they either had been deer hunting the morning before class or planned on going out rabbit hunting after school. No one thought having a weapon was a cause for concern. Obviously that changed quickly after Columbine just like our attitude changed on planes quickly post 9/11.
