UPSETS IN THE WORLD SERIES: WHEN BASEBALL HISTORY FLIPPED THE SCRIPT

October has a way of humbling giants. Dynasties arrive loaded with stars, payrolls, and expectations—only to be undone by belief, timing, and a few unforgettable swings. These World Series weren’t just wins; they were shocks that redefined what was possible.

1969 New York Mets — The Miracle Mets

The Mets stunned the heavily favored Baltimore Orioles, a team built like a dynasty. What looked like a mismatch became one of baseball’s greatest fairy tales, proving youth and momentum can overpower pedigree.

1988 Los Angeles Dodgers — Gibson’s Impossible Homer

Against the powerhouse Oakland A’s, the Dodgers were counted out—until Kirk Gibson limped to the plate. One swing rewrote the series and shattered the idea that talent alone decides championships.

2001 Arizona Diamondbacks — Slaying the Yankees Dynasty

Facing the post-9/11 Yankees in Game 7, Arizona delivered a ninth-inning comeback that ended New York’s reign. It was raw, emotional, and one of the most dramatic finishes ever.

1990 Cincinnati Reds — The Wire-to-Wire Sweep

The Reds didn’t just beat the Oakland A’s—they swept them. An underdog team dominated a defending champion dynasty from start to finish, shocking the baseball world.

2003 Florida Marlins — Youth Over Empire

With a rotation full of young arms, the Marlins outdueled the Yankees. Experience met fearlessness—and fearlessness won, cementing one of the most unexpected titles ever.

2006 St. Louis Cardinals — The 83-Win Champions

Barely scraping into the postseason, the Cardinals defeated a dominant Tigers squad. It remains the lowest regular-season win total ever for a World Series champion—chaos incarnate.

2011 St. Louis Cardinals — One Strike Away, Twice

Down to their final strike multiple times, St. Louis refused to die. The comeback against Texas became legendary, redefining clutch and crushing Rangers’ dreams.

2019 Washington Nationals — Toppling the Astros Juggernaut

All seven games were won by the road team as Washington beat Houston in Game 7. Against analytics, odds, and expectation, the Nationals authored a modern classic upset.

2014 San Francisco Giants — Wild Card to Champions

Entering as a wild card, the Giants outlasted the Royals in seven games. It capped a dynasty built not on dominance, but on October execution.

The World Series doesn’t reward resumes—it crowns moments. These upsets are reminders that baseball’s magic lives in uncertainty, where giants fall and belief becomes unstoppable.

Noticing some glaring admissions - notably the 1960 Pittsburgh team that toppled a Yankee dynasty with Maz’s game 7 HR.

1917 Sox losing was a fix - but they were heavily favored.

1991 Twins beating Braves was an upset too - look at the Braves pitching staff.

Their definition of dynasty is pretty weak.

1988-1990 A’s “dynasty” - the great dynasty that won 3 AL championships and a single series. Sorry - dynasty implies you won MULTIPLE championships in a short period of time to me.

By their definition the late 80s Broncos and early 90s Bills were “dynasties” - they got right to the finish line multiple times and lost. Great teams - but until you win 2 or more or 3 out of 5 - you’re not a dynasty in my book.
