Starting July 1st, schools can dole out $20M amongst all the sports to pay for athletes. This is in addition to any NIL money the athletes may earn.

For schools like UNC who have been a historical basketball powerhouse, the question becomes will the football program take the money from the basketball program????

This article describes how Belichik will make $10M per year and have $15M more for assistant coaches and support. When you add in a portion of the $20M + NIL deals, the football program will be managing ~$40M.

Should perennial basketball powerhouses lose their money to football programs?

So based on reputation & how each school differently distributes their funds amongst athletes, this will be yet another factor in shaking up the recruiting wars, right?

Let’s say a once irrelevant school in the sport wants to build one of the best softball programs in college and allocates the majority of money to those girls.
This will obviously bring in top recruits.

In the very near future The NCAA will eventually have to step in and dictate how the funds are split up across the board wouldn’t you think?

Title IX issues come up with how its distributed but, I think the current administration is pushing to eliminate it due to DEI issues. So, the AD may be able to split it up however he wants.

Some schools may become specialized (i.e. be the best baseball university) by piling all their money into that program instead of spreading it out.

In the past it was reputation, coaching, and #'s that went pro from a school that helped drive where recruits went. Now it will be this $20M and NIL $.

Yep sad times

I’m still not a fan of college athletes getting paid cash

They are already getting compensation with a scholarship

I guess high school athletes should be next
