With another NFL season completed and Kansas City crowned the champions, we look back at Sunday and share our thoughts.
That wasn’t the only news of the day as Northwestern basketball grabbed a few minor headlines as did Derek Carr, Zion Williamson, and the men's New Mexico State basketball program. This and our top Trends and Super System for a Monday.
Super Bowl
Most are in agreement the Super Bowl was great entertainment for 58 minutes, which included the halftime show with Rihanna. The talk remains today about the holding call on the Eagles’ James Bradberry, which decided the game.
Bradberry made a rare admission of guilt and if every defensive back was that honest, they would probably say they could be called a half dozen or more times for holding in any contest.
While some say “no one play decides a game” that is mostly true, just not 100% accurate, given the time when such a play happens. This did determine the outcome. And for those that say - the rules are the rules – I’d love to ask your reaction to getting a speeding ticket going 26 MPH in a 25 MPH school zone.
In a game that was so much fun to watch with five penalties called the entire contest to that point, that sure looked like a 50-50 call. It would have been fun to see the outcome, with Philly down three with the ball at 1:40 and a timeout left, no matter how it turned out.
As for the game, Kansas City was the better-coached team, making all the necessary adjustments at halftime and having brilliant offensive play-calling and execution, and Philadelphia not making any notable adjustments.
Philadelphia was predicted to be better at the line of scrimmage and that was not true, as the Chiefs had the better running game and slowed everyone but Jalen Hurts for coach Nick Sirianni’s team. Congrats to Kansas City, who was better prepared to make adjustments and win plays.
NCAAB
For the first time in school history, Northwestern men's basketball beat a No. 1 team knocking off Purdue Sunday 64-58 as five-point home underdogs.
NBA
NBA
With football in the rearview mirror, basketball on all fronts takes center stage. Today we offer the Nets vs. Knicks and Nuggets vs. Heat on a busy NBA Monday. We are right back at it Tuesday with two NBA tilts on TNT, the Bucks vs. Celtics and Warriors vs. Clippers, in which we have free picks for all.
NCAAB
ESPN does not call it Big Monday anymore, nonetheless, it will be important with a pair of Big 12 battles featuring Texas vs. Texas Tech and West Virginia vs. Baylor, along with Miami vs. North Carolina earlier.
On Valentine’s Day, we have six skirmishes highlighted by a Top 25 matchup with Creighton vs. Providence (FS1) and Kansas State vs. Oklahoma (ESPNU).
NHL
Check out our daily top picks and props to begin your work week.
NCAAB – New Mexico State Shuts Down Men's Basketball
A police report contained allegations of false imprisonment, criminal sexual contact, and harassment regarding hazing. This was on top of an Aggies game canceled against rival New Mexico in November after a UNM student was found dead which led to New Mexico State suspending a player as part of the investigation.
This is a developing story and here are the latest details.

NFL - Derek Carr Revokes a Trade
Derek Carr appears to want to be cut by the Raiders where he would be a free sign for anyone.
NBA - Zion Williamson to Spend More Time on the Injured List
New Orleans announced yesterday that Williamson aggravated his right hamstring in his ramp-up to return to play. Pelicans’ executive vice president of basketball operations David Griffin said "I think we're looking at multiple weeks past the All-Star break that he'll be back".
He went on, "What that looks like, in terms of timeline, I really can't tell you. Much as we have throughout this, we'll continue to image him, and post-All-Star that will happen."
Williamson has played 114 games in an almost four-year career and is looking like the next Greg Oden.
NBA – Houston at Philadelphia (Total 226.5)
Play the Over on home teams when the total is 220 to 229.5, revenging a straight-up loss as a road favorite (Sixers lost 132-123 @Houston, at -8) off a win against a division rival. Philadelphia beat Brooklyn Saturday and teams in this exact spot are 26-4 Over.
Super Bowl – The Field Was Joke
Living 15 minutes from State Farm Stadium in Glendale, I initially thought the Super Bowl game was being played on a reseeded field the Arizona Cardinals had used. I had seen all the slipping and sliding all season and just assumed that would be remedied.
After watching the Big Game and seeing what had gone on all year, I thought the field was inexcusable, only to come across after the game that this was a brand new field that the NFL wanted which if I read it correctly had never been used for an NFL game and it was designed from the U.S. Golf Association through a third-party. Seriously?
Super Bowl - Latest Betting Info
Word has it the sportsbooks will again show a profit, largely because Kansas City won the game and in-game betting.
The best sportsbooks took a hit on the total going Over and Travis Kelce and Jalen Hurts scoring touchdowns.
In the ACC on Monday, No. 15 Miami is at North Carolina. The Hurricanes are in 3rd place in the ACC and have won four straight, covering three of them. The ever-inconsistent Tar Heels blew out Clemson by 20 at Chapel Hill Saturday after losing three in a row and probably need to win out in the regular season to be invited to the Big Dance.
North Carolina opened at -4 and has been bumped to -5.5, with 75% of the money backing UNC. Yet, the bets being placed add up to 65% taking the Canes with the points. What do you think is the right side?
Let’s get some winners! See you back here Friday.
