By now, college basketball bettors need a week off (OK, maybe an NIT bet or two) after what they have seen in the NCAA Tournament. We look back and cover some of what we witnessed and look ahead. The Cleveland Cavaliers going to the playoffs isn’t that unusual, except for one aspect as we explain.
The NHL run for the Stanley Cup looks like the playoffs are starting now when looking at the division races. This and Mike Trout doing something unique and Caitlin Clark a one-of-a-kind hoops player and so much more.

About Last Weekend…

March Madness

It has been a tournament like no other. Oh, we can pick out certain similarities to others, but collectively, everything else pales in comparison.

Three of the four teams in the Final Four have never been this far (two hadn’t made the Elite 8) and that’s the first time that happened since 1970 (St. Bonaventure, Jacksonville, and New Mexico State).

Miami head coach Jim Larrañaga is 73 and he joins Larry Brown as the 2nd head coach to take multiple programs to the Final Four as a 5-seed or worse.
No McDonald’s All-American will play in this year’s Finals Four for the first since this has been tracked in 1979.

The 2023 Final Four is the first in the seeding era with three or more teams listed with odds of 50-1 or higher entering the NCAA Tournament. And one is guaranteed to play for the championship.

• Florida Atlantic: 200-1
• San Diego State: 80-1
• Miami: 50-1

There will be two teams from the state of Florida making their first Final Four appearances. The only previous instance in NCAA Tournament history of two teams from the same state making their Final Four debut in the same year: La Salle and Penn State in 1954.

We could go on and on about the Madness, but our editors want to make the deadline, I get it.

NBA

The Cleveland Cavaliers clinched a playoff berth over the weekend. Here is the backstory of this accomplishment.

Kyrie Irving gets a lot of heat coming at him in various ways and much of it is deserved. But he’s not the reason Dallas is 7-13 with him as Mavericks. Luka Dončić can be very self-centered also and yesterday he picked up his 16th technical, which means he cannot play tonight. The Mavs are out of the playoffs altogether as of today and they are 5-10 without Luka, who has a problem controlling his emotions.

NHL

After the weekend action, a look at three of the four divisions finds a fight to the finish.

In the Metropolitan, Carolina has a three-point lead over New Jersey. Minnesota leads by one in the Central over Dallas and Colorado and out West, Vegas is up two points against Los Angeles. Every team has about nine or 10 games to play. This will be fun and not easy to spot the winners against the NHL odds.

Trendy Talk

NBA

  • Houston is 7-22 ATS off a road loss this season.
  • Denver is 15-4 ATS in home games, having won three of their last four games.
  • Chicago is 12-1 Under when playing against a team with a winning record in the 2nd half of the season.
  • Minnesota is 15-3 Over in road games off a road win.

NCAAB

  • Miami is 7-1 ATS in away games versus teams making 45% or more of their shots after 15+ games this season.
  • Connecticut is 8-1 ATS in all neutral court games this season.

NHL

  • Colorado is 13-1 in road games when playing their fourth game in a week.
  • New Jersey is 15-2 in road games when playing their third game in five days.

The Buzz

Men's Final Four

From Bovada, here are the latest college basketball odds to win the national championship.
  • Connecticut #4 (-125)
  • San Diego State #5 (+365)
  • Miami Florida #5 (+500)
  • Florida Atlantic #9 (+600)

It blows our minds to realize that over 20 million people that filled out brackets at ESPN, 37 are still alive. How is there even ONE?

Women’s Final Four – You Have to Watch This

Once the field is set, if you have not seen Iowa’s Caitlin Clark you are missing true greatness.

For those that are too young to have ever seen or heard of Pete Maravich in college (Google and YouTube him), Clark is the female version of that (don’t make it a gender issue, it’s the best example I can come up with). There is nothing she cannot do offensively.

Top Betting System

NBA – Minnesota at Sacramento (Total Is 240)

Play Over or road teams when the total is 220 or higher and a team like Minnesota is off a win by six points or less, against an opponent after trailing in their last three games by 5+ points at the half (Sacramento). When these two elements align, the total is 25-7 Over.
