Whatever side you had for betting purposes for the NFL on Sunday, it was quite a day with a lot to talk about, with not all of it positive. (i.e. Officials) We also let you know what Giannis Antetokounmpo accomplished and the same for Rory McIlroy, which had him grinning ear to ear.
Plus, our usual array of betting talk and tips.
NFL Playoffs
It looked like we had two terrific games Sunday. When Brock Purdy went out with an injured elbow so went the chances of San Francisco competing with Philadelphia. The Eagles have not been pushed in the playoffs, so there will be uncertainty. Just keep in mind that four teams who won both their playoff games by 21 or more points ended up Super Bowl champs.
Cincinnati and Kansas City had a terrific contest. The news about Patrick Mahomes having a traditional high ankle sprain now seems exaggerated, though no question it limited his mobility and caused him to miss passes he usually makes.
All Cincinnati did was hang around by making plays. The Bengals' defense largely did their job and though the Cincy offensive line was completely exposed, what cost them was a special team's mistake and what Joseph Ossai did in shoving Mahomes after he left the playing field.
While many were saying the Ossai error did not cost Cincinnati to lose, the fact is that was the single biggest play of the AFC Championship. Did Mahomes oversell it, sure, nonetheless, Mahomes was off the field and Ossai shoved him.
NCAAB
No expectedly, the Big 12 whipped the SEC 7-3 in the Challenge. The biggest takeaway was after literally not having a bad game all season, Alabama (-5) never did show up against Oklahoma and was lambasted 93-69 versus a Sooners squad that is averaging 64.6 PPG in conference play.
With Kentucky improving and at home, Kansas was in serious danger of having a four-game losing streak. The Jayhawks put together a first half run to take the lead and never relinquished it to cover the +2.5. The Jayhawks still have not lost four straight games since the 1988-89 season.
NBA
With so much football Sunday, lost in the shuffle was Giannis Antetokounmpo scoring 50 points in Milwaukee 135-110 drubbing of New Orleans are 11-point favorites. Giannis earlier this month had 55 in a game and has this rare accomplishment.
NBA
NBA
We have four strong write ups on the NBA hardwood and one of those is Toronto vs. Phoenix, can either get hot with just a little over 30 games remaining in the regular season? Tuesday, see what we have to say about both TNT tilts, Lakers vs. Knicks and Pelicans vs. Nuggets.
NCAAB
There are three good games Monday from the Big 12 and the ACC, with two on ESPN, with Baylor vs. Texas. On Tuesday, among several contests that have write ups and free picks is the rematch, Kansas State vs. Kansas.
NHL
It is going to be a very light week in the NHL as they have gone to extended breaks for teams around the All-Star break, which is coming this weekend. Just one game tonight, the Blues vs. Jets, and the best matchup Tuesday is Los Angeles vs. Hurricanes.

NFL Playoffs – What Motivates People Is Odd
While I don’t pretend to know every story printed, Chiefs players seemed genuinely upset and motivated by what Cincinnati players allegedly had talked about. Patrick Mahomes said in his news conference after the win that “….like 5% picked Kansas City to win at home”, which wasn’t close to the truth as every sportsbook I checked had them at 40 to 50 percent.
Then the K.C. players and Andy Reid said the Cincinnati mayor was running his mouth too much. The mayor! A politician supporting the local team, goodness that’s a shocker!
Maybe that’s why besides the lack of talent, I like many people who would hear that nonsense and shrug our shoulders and move on to something important. I guess whatever works for you.
NFL Playoffs
Remember when you watched playoff games and you didn’t even know who the referees were? That was just a few years ago, but both games, especially the Bengals/Chiefs were atrociously officiated.
Many like to blame social media for fans of the losing teams and there is truth in that. While personally one to never blame refs, the quality of officiating in all sports has sunk and every sport needs to address it.
NFL - Aaron Rodgers on the Move?
Reports emerged Sunday that Rodgers and Green Bay “could” be willing to move on, trading their future Hall-of-Fame QB and commerce the Jordan Love era. Keep an ear out for this one.
Golf – Rory McIlroy Has Last Laugh
As reported here, we talked about ‘Tee-Gate’ when LIV golf guy Patrick Reed approached Rory about moving on their dispute on the range early in the week. Rory ignored him, Reed tossed a tee at him and McIlroy said he didn’t appreciate a subpoena on Christmas Eve from Reed’s suit.
On Sunday, after Reed had a questionable ruling (again) about a ball he hit in a tree that worked in his favor, Rory went birdie-birdie to beat Reed by a stroke to win his third Dubai Desert Classic.
NBA – Lakers vs. Nets Total of 230
Play Under on road-teams like L.A. when the total is 230 or higher, allowing 118+ points per game on the season, against an opponent after giving 115 points or more two straight games. This system is 29-7 Under with an average total score of 227.1.
Super Bowl Fodder – There Will Be More
Colorado Rockies owner Dick Monfort was reported critical of San Diego spending millions to try and win a World Series. Of course, he really wasn’t mad about that, he’s more embarrassed that the Padres and Mets are trying to win a World Series and he looks cheap not spending almost a dime yet hauling significant profits.
Monfort is one of several owners in baseball, along with those in other sports that just want a .500 team that appears to be a playoff contender. Monfort went on to say he thinks his team can be .500, coming off a 68-94 season, which would be a 13-game improvement.
All US betting sites with division MLB odds have Colorado last by a large margin and those with early season win totals have the Rocks at 71.5, a far cry from 81-81.
On a rather sleepy overall schedule Monday, Detroit travels to Dallas. Both teams have been slumping, with the Pistons 2-8 SU and ATS and the Mavs 3-8 SU and ATS. The most fascinating betting action concerns the total, which has slid from 231 to 229.5, with 87% of the cash on the Under.
But hold on, as of 2:30 ET, 61% of the bets are on the Over.
Which side do you prefer?
Let’s get some winners! See you back here Wednesday.
