About The Author: My name, as it shows, is Doug Upstone and I come from where this website originated going back to 2007/08 when I was doing videos with Peter Loshak for years. Having been a sports betting writer since 2005, I was hired by this company in 2011 and have continued to do that now at BMR. If you Google my name, you will find I have been in the sports betting industry since 2002 and betting sports long before then.
The move to the Forum is an exciting one. I've been in plenty of them in the past and though not all the experiences were positive, all I ask is to treat me and others with respect and I’ll do the same. I’ll try to be informative to help you and maybe have a few laughs together along the way.
Let's get started!
We are all fired up for a big Sunday of football action and we have it broken down into several segments for you. In addition, I’ll cover news from Thursday night, offer the day’s Top Trends, and Betting System, and ask you your thoughts on a game with two-way action.
NBA
If you had Phoenix Thursday at -1 or -1.5 NBA odds, this was a perfect reason for what makes betting hard. In the fourth quarter, Dallas missed two key free throws and Phoenix was so lazy in boxing out that the Mavs scored points on both offensive rebounds. There is no way to know if Phoenix would have scored if they had gotten possession, but those four points for Dallas and none for the Suns made a big difference in the outcome. You can’t handicap this type of laziness or effort.
I mentioned Wednesday not to trust Boston and last night they lost as nine-point home favorites to New York 120-117 in OT. That is three straight losses for the C’s and they are 0-5 ATS as of late.
NCAAB
Last night in the Pac-12, the underdogs were 4-1 ATS, highlighted by USC whipping cross-town rival UCLA by 13 points. The Bruins’ halfcourt offense is a concern as they were only 12 for 38 (31.5%)inside the arc.
Once No. 1 Purdue opened up a working margin of 8-10 points, they were never threatened at Michigan, yet, failed to cover the -5. And many others from earlier in the day had the Wolverines at +5.5 (yours truly). They just don’t feel like the best team.
NHL
It was another one of those nights in the NHL.
NFL Playoffs
NBA
NFL
The two championship games should be special and we have a bunch of articles covering both games. I’ll say one road team wins, but which one? Check out our NFL picks!
NBA
Tonight, the most fascinating game on the board is the Grizzlies vs. Warriors on NBA-TV. Can Memphis snap their four-game losing streak? Saturday on ABC we have a triple-header, which should be fun.
NCAAB
The ESPN family of networks has the Big 12- SEC Challenge with 10 games on tap Saturday. This should be great viewing and if you want a prep for March Madness, this a great way to learn a great deal about 20 teams. We also have free NCAAB picks for several of these matchups.
NHL
Friday and Saturday are the last two days that will have bigger slates, as the NHL has the All-Star stuff next weekend and every team will have a week or more off beginning Monday with very light schedules.
Tennis
The Australian Open is down to the last few matches, check out the best bets.
Soccer
If you are into soccer, we offer free picks and best bets from all the top leagues for this weekend!
NFL Playoffs - Philly Drawing a Lot of Attention
When surveying various books across the internet, 70-74 percent of bets placed are on Philadelphia to cover the -2.5 against San Francisco. Though most sportsbooks don’t reveal the money wagered, I’m hearing 55% to 60% on the Eagles.
NFL - Jets Sell Job
The New York Jets hired Nathanial Hackett to be their offensive coordinator. Hackett, as you know, was a complete bust at Denver as their head coach, but was a highly regarded OC before that. For some reason, the Jets feel they have to sell him to the media.
Here is a simple solution: "The situation was not right for coach Hackett in Denver and we are thrilled to have him in our locker room.” End of story.
If Gang Green could sign Aaron Rodgers, who likes Hackett, he could help them and likely develop Zach Wilson.
NFL Playoffs - Popular Teaser
The sportsbooks are taking a good amount of action on this teaser; Bengals +7.5/49ers +8.5. The key is going through the key numbers 3, 6, and 7, as these two games should be close contests.
NHL - Calgary (+100) Over Seattle
Play on road teams when the money line is -100 to -150 like the Flames, who rank 21st in killing penalties at 81.6%, when they are 82% or lower killing penalties in the 2nd half of the season, with an offense that has five straight games with 30 or more shots on goal. This system is 40-10 in the last four seasons.
NBA – Billy Packer
Sorry to hear about the loss of Billy Packer at 82. Though he was a bit of a tool later in life, he explained the game in a simple-to-understand way that was straight to the point. He, like Dick Vitale, had a lot to do with the growth of college basketball in the 1970s and 80s.
NFL Playoffs – Wanting to Make a Prop Bet?
This might be a good one to consider.
Another we are hearing a lot about against the NFL odds is Ja’Marr Chase - Anytime Touchdown. Chase has one in three straight games and five of the last six.
NFL Playoffs – Mahomes Is Steaming
Sportsbooks around the world have taken Patrick Mahomes – Passing Yards from the low 270s to over 285 yards with reports he is looking good in practice.
NCAAB – Big 12/SEC Challenge Schedule
January 28, 2023
In the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference, on Friday, we have two middle-of-the-road clubs doing battle with Manhattan at Niagara. The Purple Eagles opened as a 6.5-point home favorite and have been knocked to -5.5 with 73% of bets placed on them (as of 2:30 ET). The money is a different story with over 80% of cash on the Jaspers.
Manhattan won the earlier meeting 64-59 as three-point home underdogs, so what do you think will happen this time?
Let’s get some winners! Have a great weekend and see you back here Monday
