Atlanta waited several days to fire their head coach Nate McMillan, but we are guessing he already knew as we explain. Four first-place teams in college basketball did what they were supposed to last night and won despite what the odds said.

The Oilers Connor McDavid joined an elite list Tuesday. Alabama men’s basketball hopes of reaching the Final Four are not gone, yet, they have entered an unsavory spot. This and all the usual fun betting material for you!

About Last Night…

NCAAB

On Tuesday we saw multiple examples of the cream rising to the top in college basketball. VCU garnered less than 40% of bets made against St. Joseph’s as 5.5-point road favorites and the Rams hammered the Hawks 88-63 to maintain their lead in the A-10.

Akron was catching four points at first place Toledo and more than 85% of both public and sharp-money college basketball picks were on the Zips. Instead, the Rockets rocketed by Akron 84-63 and they took sole possession of the MAC lead.

Marquette owned the top spot in the Big East and went to Omaha to face a white-hot Creighton club. The Bluejays had a small majority of the wagers against the NCAAB odds, but it was the Golden Eagles at +6.5 that won 73-71 in an excellent battle.

Texas hosting Iowa State appeared to be the classic sell high (Longhorns) at -7.5, vs. buying low (Cyclones) +7.5. However, the Horns superior offense opened up an 18-point first-half lead thanks to a blizzard of nine 3’s and they coasted in 72-54 to remain tied with Kansas atop the Big 12.

NHL

Edmonton’s Connor McDavid reached 800 career points in his 545th career game in his team’s 4-2 win (-320) over Philadelphia. That is the 5th-fewest games to reach 800 career points in NHL history after Hall of Famers Wayne Gretzky (352), Mario Lemieux (410), Mike Bossy (525), and Peter St’astny (531) according to ESPN Stats & Info.

This also happened in the same play.

The Buzz

NCAAB – Alabama Hoops Star In the Wrong Spotlight

Every year now or in early March, something happens to a team that is considered a Final 4 finalist. Normally, it is an injury that alters the trajectory of a team.

Yesterday, local law enforcement reports have Alabama star Brandon Miller giving a gun to then-teammate Darius Miles, who gave it to Michael Lynn Davis, who is charged with murdering Jamea Jonae Harris, on Jan. 15.

Tuscaloosa chief deputy district attorney Paula Whitley told AL.com there’s “nothing we could charge (Miller) with.”

Alabama head coach Nate Oats was asked about Miller’s involvement, saying a team “can’t control what anybody does outside of practice” and that Miller was in the “wrong spot at the wrong time.”

Those puzzling comments were later walked back by Oats, but it was too late. Curious about where this story goes from here and what it will mean to Bama basketball.

NBA – Atlanta Fires Head Coach

With Atlanta having played last Wednesday, it seemed odd it took them six days to fire Nate McMillan. The Hawks after losing 8 of 13, are 29-30 and 8th in the Eastern Conference.

It was not a secret McMillan and Atlanta’s star player Trae Young were not on the same page. My best guess is the NBA told the Hawks to wait until after the All-Star weekend to not steal any headlines.

Top Betting System

NCAAB – South Alabama (-2.5) at Texas State

Play on road favorites like South Alabama off a home blowout win by 20 points or more, a marginal winning team (51% to 60%), playing a marginal losing team.

This rare system is 35-10 ATS over the past two decades and clubs like the Jaguars wing by an average of 8.4 PPG.

Out the Door

Golf – Betting Odds for the Honda Classic

Favorites

• Sungjae Im (+850)
• Shane Lowry (+1600)
• Aaron Wise (+2200)
• Chris Kirk (+2500)

Many of the top players are taking this week off, which seems obvious.

MLB – Betting Baseball

I’ve written my first baseball article of 2023.

Living in the Phoenix area, I go to several Spring Training games and try to see every team once. (There are 15).
Thursday at BMR, I’ll have the first of six division betting previews starting with the AL Central. After completing this one, the thing I cannot get out of my head is that 39-year-old Zack Greinke is the Royals’ No. 2 starter going into the season.
