The first day of a long baseball season is in the books and we cover various elements that featured some surprising outcomes. The Final Four for both the men’s and women’s tournaments are ready to go and we talk about what to look for.

Also, make sure to review all the latest betting trends for this upcoming weekend along with free picks.

About Last Night…

MLB

For the first time since 1968, every team played on Opening Day and favorites were 9-6 with Over’s 8-7.

Among the newsworthy betting items, the team that scores five runs first wins 91% to 92% of the time in MLB and the Phillies had a 5-0 lead on Texas. Next, the Rangers had their biggest inning of the season (just seeing if you are paying attention) and scored nine runs, and cruised to an 11-7 victory.

The Blue Jays and Cardinals had a 10-9 slugfest as both bullpens had issues until Toronto's Jordan Romano slammed the door on St. Louis in the bottom of the 9th inning.

There were also several zeros on the scoreboard with five teams pitching shutouts which brought this newsworthy item to the forefront.

The more things change the more they stay the same as Shohei Ohtani pitched six scoreless innings allowing two hits and striking out 10. The Angels could only muster one run and they gave up two to Oakland in the bottom of the eight and lost 2-1. What else is new about the Halos?

Finally, the Chicago White Sox ended Houston’s 10-game opening game win streak (and 10-0 in home openers) with their 3-2 triumph. That leaves the Astros tied with the Boston Beaneaters (1887-96) for the longest streak in MLB history, according to ESPN Stats and Info.

NBA

In what was supposed to be the best remaining games in the regular season, Boston mauled Milwaukee 140-99. The Celtics were two-point road underdogs and were 22 for 43 from behind the arc. And the C’s accomplished a rare feat.

NHL

Though pushed to OT by Columbus as ginormous -470 ML home favorites, Boston won and clinched the Presidents' Trophy, set the franchise record with 58 wins in a season and tied 1970-71 Bruins for most points in Boston history at 121, with still seven games to play.

Before placing a bet on Boston to win the Stanley Cup, know that only eight of 36 President’s Cup winners have captured the hardware.

NIT

Congrats to the best defense in college basketball, North Texas, who won the NIT over conference rival UAB 68-61 as 2.5-point underdogs. The Mean Green held its last nine opponents to a suffocating 33.3% shooting.

The Buzz

MLB – Shifty Numbers

It’s only the first day of the season, but ground balls in play for Opening Day had a .267 batting average, compared to .241 last year. Something to follow with no shift.

MLB – Angels Sorry Start but One Highlight

Women's Final Four – If You Have the Time

Tonight is the women’s Final Four and the second game will feature Iowa, with Caitlin Clark, versus undefeated South Carolina, as the defending champion. The Lady Gamecocks are a large 11.5-point favorite with a total of 150, but Clark will draw a lot of interest.

Top Betting System

FINAL FOUR – Florida Atlantic vs. San Diego State (Total 131.5)

When the total is between 130 and 139.5 points on a neutral court and a team like the Aztecs is off an upset win as an underdog, against an opponent off two or more consecutive upset wins as an underdog, the Under is 45-14. More recently, the Under is on an 11-2 run with an average total score of 129.7 points.

How about that for a tongue twister?

Out The Door

Final Four – Betting Notes

The past five times an ACC team made it this far (and 7 of 8) and didn’t face a conference foe, they won and made it to the championship game.

Since 2012, favorites are 16-6 SU, but 9-12-1 ATS.

In 17 of the previous 18 Final Fours, one of the two favorites went on to become national champions. Nine years ago, Connecticut as a 6.5-point underdog stunned Florida as the lone exception.

Miami is 9-2 ATS this season as an underdog and 33-12 ATS as underdogs in the past three seasons. Just keep in mind also that UConn is 15-0 and 14-1 ATS outside the Big East this year.

NFL – This Action Was Not Changed

In a somewhat surprising move, the ability to push a runner on 3rd or 4th down and inches to go was not changed to make it illegal. The general belief was this would happen, but it didn’t. Look for this to be even more egregious in 2023.
