Here are the rankings (last week in parentheses):
1. Chiefs (1) - TIme to see what Andy Reid has been scheming up after a bye week. We know he’s usually good after those. Tennessee is hot, so it will be interesting to see what it all looks like on Sunday night.
2. Bills (2) - A great first half from the Bills, though they did seem to struggle a bit in the second half. Allen looked a little scattered, and the running game wasn’t quite there as much – at least consistently down the stretch. Maybe they fell asleep, but something to look out for. They are laying 13 on the road this week in New York.
3. Eagles (3) - The boys keep winning, and there’s no reason they shouldn’t continue given the upcoming cupcake schedule. It will be interesting to deal with a short week and a trip to Houston – hopefully they are not snoozing at the wheel. Not much to complain about here.
4. 49ers (7) - This team got a week of McCaffery under its belt, and man did he look great. The offense looked very crisp and efficient, and that is without Deebo Samuel. I don’t see how defenses are going to be able to contain the bevy of weapons this team has now. On top of that, the defense had a nice bounce back game and looked very locked in. The bye should provide them more opportunities to jell with McCaffery.
5. Vikings (6) - It hasn’t always looked pretty, but this team keeps finding ways to win. They stay within shouting distance of Philly in the race for the 1 seed. The Commanders could be a tough spot for them, but again they have a shot to pad the record.
6. Ravens (8) - Big win for Baltimore on Thursday night against a desperate Bucs team. The game didn’t get off to a great start, but Lamar played an exceptional second half and the defense played well to keep the Bucs at bay. Another primetime game is coming up, on Monday night in New Orleans.
7. Cowboys (9) - This team didn’t play great defensively, but man did they look in sync on offense. They haven’t reverted back to having Dak sling it around too much. They stick to the running game, which they can obviously do very well. This team continues to improve week by week. Let’s see if they can keep it rolling after the bye.
8. Titans (10) - This team has quietly gone back to its roots and has taken command of the AFC South one again. Credit to the run game for being able to punish Houston despite them giving no indication of being willing to pass. Also major props to the defense, who played outstanding. Tough one at Arrowhead coming up, but a nice test for the Titans.
9. Rams (5) - This may seem high for the defending champs given their glaring offensive holes. But I don’t think the loss was as bad as the scoreboard indicated. Very 50/50 game for most of it until it broke open towards the end, against a team that played exceptionally well and is frankly just better than them. Big game in Tampa coming up against another struggling team.
10. Patriots (14) - Nice divisional win for the Patriots in a game that they really needed to keep within striking distance of the wild card contenders in the AFC. They did have enough mistakes and field goal settling to give Bill some material to make improvements on, so look for a cleaner game at home against Indy this week.
11. Dolphins (16) - I didn’t love how they played for most of that game, but the defense stepped up when it needed to after being pretty pathetic early on. Tua had a solid performance after a so-so game against Pittsburgh, and now Miami looks back on track to make some noise in the playoff picture. Winnable game in Chicago, though I don’t think it will be a cakewalk.
12. Seahawks (21) - Big win at home for the Seahawks, giving them a position as first in the division heading into a big match-up in Arizona this weekend. With Niners off and Rams struggling, this gives them an opportunity to take a “commanding” lead in the division. Who would have thought?
13. Bucs (13) - Tough loss at home against a good Baltimore team, as the offense continues to not be in rhythm. It will be interesting to see whether or not that can change by season’s end. Big game to stay in the thick of it in the NFC South against the Rams coming up.
14. Giants (11) - The team unraveled a little bit in the second half, which is unfortunate after a decent defensive showing. It kind of shows us how much trouble they’re in when they have to play from behind. Jones continues to really struggle in the pocket, which is concerning moving forward. Bye week to figure some things out on the offensive end, before trying to keep the momentum going.
15. Jets (12) - A little bit of a setback for the team and a reality check for Zach Wilson. The defense continues to look pretty good, but the offense will go ultimately as their quarterback goes, and that does not look like a good proposition. It’s definitely weird to see a 5-3 team getting 13 points at home, but Buffalo will be difficult nevertheless.
16. Packers (15) - Obviously not a great result in Buffalo, and the run defense continues to be a major problem in addition to their explosiveness offensively. But they did show some competency and willingness to run the ball. That’s the style they have to play with in order to turn this thing around. Detroit at home should be a decent opportunity for the Pack to get on track.
17. Chargers (17) - It’ll be interesting to see how this highly-touted team comes out after a bye. Can they get their shit together? The injuries have been brutal, but they should have enough to be better than this. Time to show it.
18. Falcons (22) - Credit to this team for bouncing back after a trainwreck in Week 8. This wasn’t a pretty game by any means, obviously, and the defense is starting to unravel a bit on the back end, but gotta give them credit for finding a way to win after nearly blowing it. Competition sucked, but division games are never easy. They are very well-coached and I think they have a shot to win this weekend at home and get to 5-4.
19. Commanders (24) - This team has found something on offense, and they’re finally getting their playmakers the ball! Additionally, the defense is starting to look kind of decent. Minnesota will not be easy, but they definitely have a shot to win and get to 5-4.
20. Cardinals (19) - Another competitive game that Arizona felt it could win against a formidable team. They hung in there, and had a shot – much like they did against Philly. They are right in the mix in a bunched up division, but they gotta get on the right track at home against Seattle this week.
21. Colts (20) - There are definitely some pros to having Sam Ehlinger start, such as creating a little bit more potential for successful plays outside the pocket. But there are limitations, and he doesn’t look like a guy that has nearly the pocket presence that a guy like Matt Ryan does. Aside from that, this game was a total disaster when it comes to how it ended. Just gut-wrenching for them. They have a tough trip to New England on deck.
22. Browns (26) - That was the most complete game this team has played this year. The running game got going, and credit to Brissett for steadying the ship and making some nice throws. Cleveland heads into the bye with a little bit of momentum, perhaps feeling like they can claw their way back into this thing.
23. Steelers (23) - It wasn’t a great performance this week, but who the hell has played well against Philly this year? Pickett continues to show some flashes, but he still is pretty raw to be a starter on a good team at this level. It seems like they are starting to turn the page on this season a bit, dishing out Claypool for instance. They have a week to regroup before starting the second half of the year.
24. Saints (27) - These stubborn Saints live to fight another day in the disgusting NFC South. The defense FINALLY looked like a unit that was worth the praise it was getting at the beginning of the year. I think they need to ride with Dalton, he’s just a better QB. Tough test at home against Baltimore, but I think they can get it done.
25. Raiders (18) - Pretty embarrassing performance in New Orleans. After an 0-3 start, these guys were playing a lot better and had a shot to get back to a 3-4 record that at least would get them in the mix to some degree. Now the hill is tougher to climb, and things won’t be easy schedule wise. However, this week does provide some opportunity to get back on track in Jacksonville.
26. Bears (25) - The defense had a pretty abysmal performance in Texas against a pretty good Dallas team that is starting to really get into a groove on that side of the ball. It is very encouraging though to see Justin Fields continue to take some incremental steps towards becoming a more complete NFL quarter. They have a chance to get back to a serviceable 4-5 record at home against the Dolphins.
27. Panthers (28) - Another gritty effort by a team that had an opportunity to take the lead in the division! Wow, the NFC South sucks. This team looks to be trying to still dish out some of its pieces and isn’t really interested in winning, but credit to PJ Walker these past few weeks for making some plays. They visit a pissed off Cincinnati team this Sunday.
28. Broncos (32) - Oh look at that, Russ didn’t completely suck ass this week! A rare win for Denver, who was very desperate for one. That is a nice bit of momentum for a struggling Broncos team heading into the bye. Defense continues to play pretty well, so let’s see if the offense can match.
29. Lions (30) - It was a better performance than most we’ve seen recently, which ain’t saying much. This team kind of blows, and trading away one of their few weapons is basically waiving the white flag. Hopefully their defense can gain some experience down the stretch this season.
30. Texans (31) - Yeah this team has some issues. I think we saw them playing nice and plucky early on, and they felt like a nice team to back. But their deficiencies are starting to really be exploited, and the mounting losses may be pushing this team to give up earlier and easier. The job won’t be easy at home against Philly this week.
31. Jaguars (29) - Talk about hitting a new low. After three weeks, this was a sexy playoff pick. Now? Back to being Jacksonville. The offense continues to be lackluster at best, and the defense is showing some of its holes as well. Letting Denver march down the field like that towards the end of the game? Oof. They got a desperate Raiders team coming to town in what should be an instant classic lol.
32. Bengals (4) - Hey if you wanna dick around and get your ass scorched by Cleveland Browns, this is where you’re gonna be. Ja’Marr Chase isn’t gonna get healthy overnight so you better get used to not playing with him. Show up and win by double digits next week, or this is your home going into the bye.
