With Gretzky’s goal record being tied tonight (once thought unbreakable) I was thinking about a few records off the top of my head I don’t think will ever be broken

(I’m sure there are more - records like Cy Young’s win total pretty much don’t count as far as this stuff goes because he pitched in the dead-ball era and obviously 511 wins will never be broken)

A few I think of are

Gretzky’s total points 2,857
Nolan Ryan strikeouts 5,714
Ripkin consecutive games played 2,632

Not a “record” - but Ray Caldwell - struck by lightning and still finished the game/

The incredible story of Ray Caldwell

Players today no where near as dedicated to playing the game as before. $$/longevity have take precedence over winning.

There was a time when players did whatever it took to win the game. They didn’t care about personal stats - the played to win. Pete Rose was probably the last of that type of player - and even later on Pete had a a bit of ego about him.

Lots of guys later in their careers started caring more and more about sticking around/winning - but very few stars are 100% team and 0% ego these days.

Agree. Pete was one of a kind

Wish his legacy for so many wasn’t his gambling but the way he played the game

And the mark he left on the record books
