A steal is given to anyone who creates a turnover. I can literally get a steal if I deflect a pass off someone's leg on the other team. That's the NBA scoring on that one so I think it stands that Bam gets a steal because there was a change of possession.

This doesn't apply as a turnover was not "created" by the defensive player.

But, like I said, the NBA will credit a steal to the benefactor of a turnover.

So just dropping the ball is the turnover, and whoever picks it up gets credit for a steal. This is a NBA thing.
