US and Russian warplanes had a close encounter when two of Vladimir Putin's nuclear bombers were sighted near Alaska.
American fighter jets allegedly scrambled to intercept the Russian nuclear aircraft that Putin dispatched near Alaska's shoreline. The Russian defense minister confirmed that their heavy-duty 'Bear' strategic bombers "appeared near the coast of Alaska" during an 11-hour flight over the Bering Sea.
Moscow stated: "At certain stages the missile carriers were accompanied by fighter jets of foreign countries". Footage from the Russian Defense Ministry shows an Alaskan Air National Guard warplane, a part of the United States Air Force.

The plane bears the marking AK and the number 304 on its tail fin alongside a Russian Su-30SM fighter jet escort. "Two Tu-95MS strategic missile-carrying bombers of the Russian Aerospace Forces' long-range aviation carried out a scheduled flight in the airspace over the neutral waters of the Bering Sea near the western coast of Alaska," the defense ministry mentioned.
"The flight lasted over 11 hours. Crews of Su-30SM of the Aerospace Forces provided fighter support." Uncertainty remains regarding which other foreign states dispatched their aircraft to observe the Russian mission. Given proximity, Canada seems the most likely Western country.

Moscow defended itself stating "all flights of the Russian Aerospace Forces are carried out in strict compliance with international rules of airspace use". The Tu-95 fleet plays a crucial role in Russia's nuclear arsenal and has been used to deliver devastating conventional missile strikes resulting in large-scale destruction in Ukraine.
A part of the Russian nuclear force, the Soviet-era Tu-95s, first took flight about 70 years ago and still remain as the world's only strategic bombers powered by propeller. These air encounters come amidst a growing resentment in Moscow over the US resuming significant arms supplies to Ukraine. This is part of an aid package worth $61 billion for war.

Reports last week confirmed that the White House intends to dispatch a hefty security package to Ukraine inclusive of much-needed air defense systems and artillery rounds. "We rose to the moment, we came together and we got it done," US President Joe Biden said at a White House event last week.
He added that speed was now crucial and they were indeed moving fast. Senior US officials have painted a bleak picture of battlefield conditions in Ukraine, citing shortages of ammunition and advancements by Russian forces.
Post Russia's invasion in Feb 2022, the US dispatched more than $44 billion to Ukraine including weapons, maintenance, training and spare parts. Amongst these provisions were the formidable Abrams M1A1 battle tanks.
