Way too damn young - but had an interest life after baseball.
Imagine picking up and moving to Portugal with nothing more than what you can carry. Develop problems as a result of the long flight there and go to the hospital - find out you or only have DVT but then get diagnosed with stomach cancer.
Wound up selling his autograph to raise money for his cancer treatments as he had nothing else left. Only had half the service time requirements for MLBPA health insurance - so wasn’t covered under the former players plan. Really sucks in a way the supposed “well funded” union doesn’t do more for guys with less than 10 years service time. 5 would seem to be a much more reasonable number to be fully vested - given injury and nature of the game. If you make it 10 years in today’s game - you tasted free agency in your prime at least once - 5 it’s possible you were never not out of club control and got injured.
