Amazing player and executive. He was simply smarter than anyone else in the game.

Even more amazing if you would have seen where he came from - used to drive up through WV on the way back and forth between home and NC - passed through Kanawha County many times - it’s just South of Charleston and there’s a sign on the highway for Cabin Creek - Home of Jerry West (technically from a small town nearby).

West talked about his father and the issues he encountered early on - and how it took a very long time to get help with those issues. Deep in those hollers of WV - it’s just a different way of living. College wasn’t a thing for a kid whose parents weren’t rich - and even those that did go would typically wind up working as a foreman or fire boss down on the mines after going.

RIP Jerry - you helped make the NBA a world wide league.
