Producer Dave Jerden has passed at 75

Doubtful many here know the name - but if you’re a fan of 90s music - you certainly know the work he brought to prominence.

Debuts by Social Distortion, The Red Hot Chili Peppers, Jane’s Addiction and Alice In Chains as well as Dirty Work by the Stones and Jagger’s solo effort She’s the Boss. Literally helped shape the sound of a generation with 5 of the most important albums of the grunge era. So much of the grunge stuff felt like recycled arena rock to me - but Facelift and Dirt - they were completely different. It was metal for the mainstream and those first 2 from Jane’s Addiction were just strokes of genius production wise.

Mike Ness is one of those guys who despite being very well known remains “underrated” as a musician in my opinion.

Very smart guy - always liked how he borrowed the idea of using soap bars in his guitars from Neil Young. It’s tough as hell to take a guitar tone that’s very nasally and old school country in sound and make it “rock” - but he does it better than anyone.

He is lucky to still be alive, tough battle with throat cancer but I think he is ok now. Touring like crazy. I have seen Social D a bunch of times over the years. I absolutely love that band.

Gibson Custom Mike Ness ‘76 LP Deluxe

Never quite understood the logic behind this one though - granted Gibson does a ton of these “specials” where you could buy the original/non celebrity owned cheaper than their “faithful recreation”.

So originally priced at 8k - now sell between 10-14k - because well, people are morons.

An original ‘76 Deluxe sells between $2500-4k - set of S-D p90’s probably around $350 and what are you missing - a couple of stickers?

I mean I get it when they recreate a 250k ‘59 burst and sell it for 10k - no way in hell most people can afford the real deal (or the ‘59 reissue - but change the serial number to start with an 8 and they sell it at half price with no other distinguishable change - but that’s a different matter).

Still- always thought it was a cool as hell looking guitar. I’ve seen some well done home builds over the years for much less. Maybe one day I’ll do one myself.
