I know a lot of people dog on Coach Pop around here but this is a very sad day for a lot of Spurs fans

He’s an icon where I live and a great part of the community

I figured this would be the case, however, as it seems his health problems have worsened

Even those that don’t like Pop should give him the credit he deserves for the Spurs dynasty and five rings

Sounds like he’s staying in the front office. Not sure if he’ll really be around that much

Likely Spurs want to make sure he gets paid his remaining contract, etc. he’s well loved in the organization

No doubt. I always respected the way he carried himself.

Cue @jjgold to tell us what a piece of shit Pop is and that he can never win without Hall of Famers, while he neglects to mentioned that Pop made many of those guys Hall of Famers.

Pop coached Tony Parker, who was, objectively, the best player in the world at the time. He had won Championships on multiple continents. Don't think Pop didn't have a part in that.

Pop coached the Spurs six years longer than Jerry Sloan coached the Jazz

I remember thinking back in the day Sloan coached them forever

He often remarked about the value of international players and the overall difference in work ethic between them and American players.

He would know.
The foundation for their dynasty was the Spurs being way ahead of anyone on drafting foreign players, getting Parker late first round and Ginobili second round

Two of the greatest positional draft picks of all time

Having Tim Duncan was a fairly decent thing too

Yeah, on the American side Pop went from David Robinson to Tim Duncan and knew exactly what to do with them.

You can see the aim for Wemby and how that could have been sick if Pop were near his prime.

Pop coached 6 Hall of Famers with the Spurs...Pau Gasol, Duncan, Parker, Robinson, and Dominique Wilkins.

Legend.
