josh gibson will now surpass raul Ibanez for the coveted #276 on the all time list of HRs. I will not pick him. but rather the guy he passed and is now #277

Stats are just that - statistics.

People need to understand just because you hit a higher average - doesn’t mean all factors are equal. Hell - I'd take Ted Williams over most hitters if I needed a hit to win the game - statistically not the greatest - but to the eye test - he is to me.

Some guys were great - but will always be slightly “overrated” based on stats. Most people understand that these players weren’t playing against the absolute best every day - but they were playing against guys of major league talent and excelled. Was Satchel Paige the best pitcher ever - not to me…but neither was Nolan Ryan. Both put up good numbers thanks to long careers and have their fan bases.

One thing you always have to take into account stats-wise when talking about Williams and folks in his era is he missed four years plus in the absolute prime of his career due to WWII. Was an ace pilot.

Love Ted Williams. There was a great bio on him, HBO maybe. I wish I could find it again.

True - a lot of guys missed out due to WW2

Oddly - you never hear how guys who were too old for the war effort or didn’t participate for whatever reason “padded” their stats not playing against all the greats who were away. Same for those in negro leagues in this era.

Williams was so much more than a baseball player - military hero, legendary outdoorsman and supposedly one hell of a marksman with a rifle. He was a man’s man in an era when that type of thing wasn’t frowned upon by society.

Funny. I was going to use the term man’s man in my post but got lazy.

And yes, they focused on all of the above in the documentary on him.
