…and unfortunately now having to deal with one.

Had a renter - started out well enough, they came to me - looking to rent a house I had near their immediate family. Actually came recommended by current landlord - they had a mobile home rented and just had been awarded custody of grandkids - so needed a bigger place - fast. Helped them out on rent for helping me clean out the property (inherited house fully furnished).

They asked if I’d be interested in selling some furniture as they didn’t have much. Said no - but said they could use what they needed while staying there - and what they didn t just place in storage units with the other stuff.

So starting in February started getting “weird” vibes - they said dishwasher stopped working and I sent someone out to replace it - wouldn’t let him in. Went to check furnace and again couldn’t get in - when I decided enoughs enough and listed the place for sale - they wouldn’t let realtor in. So I filed a 30 day notice to boot their asses.

Get a call - they would go without an issue - just needed a month - so fair enough. Of course in the mean time no paid rent. Anyway - realtor calls me the other day - tenant gave him keys - but no address or opportunity to inspect. I go to check out today - completely cleaned me out.

Not only did they steal the furniture from house (who steals used beds/couch and TV?!?) but broke into storage unit and took boxes of glassware they had packed and stored for me - old family framed photos (antique portraits in curved glass frames) - a couple of depression era lamps and a ton of power tools/chainsaws and brush cutters.

Furniture is annoying as some of it was older family heirloom stuff - tools and stuff are just tools and can be replaced - but the China/glassware and photos and some other “primitive” stuff was family heirloom things. Who steals crap like that anyway - I mean obviously antiques have “value” - but not to a pawn shop - not like a tv or power tools. I mean just because a book “says” a piece of glassware is worth $100 - doesn’t mean people are knocking your door down to buy it for $100…there’s a reason why antique stores are filled with this crap.

Now I’ve got to do a full inventory for insurance. Local PD is useless - too damn lazy even to stop out and deliver a theft report form to complete and document the scene.

I’d find and sue their asses for rent - move out damage (not bad - just a few things) and my insurance deductible - but guaranteed they have nothing to collect - and of course local PD has no interest in investigating or charging. (Thinking they may be on radar for bigger things - I/e drugs - but don’t want to blow that case on this petty case).

I absolutely hate people - try to help someone and this is what you get.

Sorry this happened to you. There has always been people like this but lately it seems like this kind of stuff is running rampant. . A Breakdown of civility.

Yea - but of course if I decide to do something about it - 1000% guarantee my ass would be locked up.

You steal - no big deal - so long as you still from someone of “privilege”.

But try and take it back from a thief - your a criminal.

Good renters are hard to find. As landlords sometimes we expect too much, but most times it's people like these assholes that fukks everything up.
I bought my first house at 23 since then I had to rent once when between houses in my late 20's. Left the place better than I found it. Most that rent from the guy I did, complain about him, I had no problems. When I was looking at the house, he told me he did not put up with drugs. I told him ''look I've got a great job and own a business that operates locally, I would lose all if it, if busted for drugs.'' Told him ''I may drink a few beers and chase a few women around the house but that's about it.'' He laughed and said that be fine.

Wow. What a pain. Sorry to hear this.

I would find them and sue them anyway. Why?--> You can put a lien on their paycheck. If a court determines they can't afford to pay you now, the lien will be in place for years and eventually you can get paid.

Unfortunately - garnishing a meth dealer paycheck is not as simple as a working person.

Just goes to show you never trust “references” - got a feeling last place knew easiest way to get rid of them was give a good reference.

Again - if it were just “replaceable” stuff - I’d just let insurance handle. It’s the sentimental stuff that burns me.

Go the “violence” route - and it’s my ass in the slammer. Drugs have a way of sorting fate out in my experience - and if not - I’ve got a long memory, a lot of remote property and equipment to dig.

You obviously rented to a crystal meth user. They are the only type of people who steal stuff like that. Thieves are def very low on the totem pole though. Especially people who steal from other people and not jew banks. Like I don't condone stealing but at least steal from someone who is also stealing if you are going to stoop to that level.

Yeah, I agree. Not much you can do with a lien.
