He should have quit after the Forman fight (at that point he had avenged both losses - Frazier and Norton) and regained the title when he beat Big George.
He kept coming back and got hurt in a lot of those fights (the Thrilla in Manila took so much out of Frazier and Ali and neither man was ever the same) and of course Holmes hurt Ali badly.
Most of the times it’s because they manage their money so poorly. A lot of hands in the cookie jar with those guys. And some just miss the limelight.
