Those Steve Carlton/Nolan Ryan games lasted 2 hours. My pops didn't like taking us to those games as you didn't get your moneys worth

I went to see Nolan Ryan pitch about 3-4 times in high school. They were a happening. Wish I’d have been lucky enough to see one of his 7 no-hitters.

Last time was maybe 1990 or 1991 opening day. President (daddy) Bush threw out the first pitch when W owned the Rangers and Secret Service presence was crazy. That was pre-9/11 when it was very rare to see anything like that. Metal detectors, etc. me and my buddy drove up from Austin to Arlington. Got back home about 4 am. Those were the days

Great read. That 1972 season with 30 complete games. 30 is just insane. Today's kids watching sports have no clue

Yeah. It’s kinda routine now to get 98, 99, 100. Back in Ryan’s day it was so rare
No

Bushnell & Pocket Radar are used by MLB and are, admittedly, off by 1 5-5 MPH

The Juggs gun was used thru 1999, and has a margin of error of 0.050 mph.

IE the Juggs gun was more accurate and no, today's mlb pitchers are not throwing 100 every pitch, it's a marketing gimmick propped up by intentionally poor equipment.

After all, if it were harder to hit, HRs and Runs would be way down from the 60s-99. But they're not, they're actually UP a run per game. Pitching is not better today, it's borderline horrible.

I remember that gun Fatty. The one that measured true MPH.

Some dads of HS kids would always use the gun that would boost their kids mph by 4-5 mph. When the college scouts would come out to see a HS kid they were told threw 91 or 92, he’d actually be throwing 86-87 on their gun.

Yup, that's the pocket radar that's way off.

Juggs was, and still is, the most accurate reading.

MLB top mph probably up a tick for premier arms, but the bullpen grunts are all the same today as they were in the 80s...it's 90-93 max. Problem today is Noone can throw a slide piece accurately or a change that actually is 7 mph less (the statistical variation required to fool the human eye).

Of note, the only pitch that is impossible to hit is a change up that comes from a same arm angle and same arm velocity that is 12% slower than the previous pitch.

It's crazy- like folding paper in half 8 times (cannot be done). Very few men have been able to throw a change up in that spectrum. I've been lucky to watch 2 of the best ever here in Minny, Viola & Santana.
