time to think about where he ranks in the pantheon of American sports broadcasters.
I always liked his intro to the 1980 Olympic hockey game between USA and USSR:
"People do not know the difference between a Blue Line and a clothesline."
"An event that needs no buildup, no superfluous adjectives."
"Manifestly, it is a hockey game. The United States and the Soviet Union on a sheet of ice in Lake Placid, New York."
...Not many could do it that well.
