Juneteenth, also known as Juneteenth Independence Day or Freedom Day, is a holiday celebrated on June 19th to commemorate the emancipation of enslaved African Americans in the United States. It specifically marks the day, June 19, 1865, when Union soldiers arrived in Galveston, Texas, to announce the end of slavery, following the Emancipation Proclamation, according to the National Park Service (.gov). Juneteenth became a federal holiday in 2021.
