It’s a learned trait - years of explaining why they can’t pay or telling their spouse/employer what happened to the $$ they were entrusted with.

Gamblers always got a “you’ll never believe this..” story.

Ask any bookmaker how many stories they have heard over the years.

In your entire betting life, have you ever made up a story to someone to cover up a major bet loss, DJ?

It goes back to the 1900s and I think you could put it in the same categories as golfers, tremendous storytellers

People lie for one of 3 reasons:

- self preservation - they lie to protect themselves and their well being (maintain the status quo) - they feel they have no other choice to protect themselves. They make up a story to cover up a loss - I/E make up a story about what happened to money they lost - so as to not be blamed.

- for personal gain (financially or ego or both) - gamblers are notoriously ego. Lie to explain a sudden “windfall” or cash gained from gambling (when they can’t otherwise explain it/should not be gambling) or to make it seem like they are smarter than they are. Lots of gamblers boast of big wins - while leaving out the losses they sustain.

- finally lying to just lie (there is no benefit - nothing to be gained versus just telling the truth. These people are pure sociopaths.

Done quite a few courses over the years with work on the “science of lies”. It’s amazing how far some people will go with lies over relatively simple things.

Gamblers are some of the worst - the lie is usually small - but once it starts to unravel it becomes a whole thing. Things like stealing a few thousand dollars from their employer. You begin to unravel the lie and realize they have done this before to multiple employers. Worse - I’ve seen cases of simple theft backfire on the employer - managers stealing on a much larger scale - all uncovered because of a small timer. They of course tried to pin it all on the person caught - but didn’t take long to figure out they weren’t the only culprit.

No - really never had a need to lie about my gambling before. I’ve always been pretty open about it. These days I’m not near the gambler I was when I was young and single. In those days I was more about booking the bets than making them. It was easy money - but this was right as the internet was beginning to be a thing. Once I saw what was happening on the net - I wisely decided to get the hell out of that business.

A white lie is the only lie we can all tolerate.
