+EV Experts: Do you need the Royal to realize Video Poker 99% payout.

So if a video poker machine pays out, lets say 99% payout:

You could be down a ton, but to get to that 99% payout you need the Royal at some point?

Educate us.

Hi, Fazzer. I'm not a Video Poker expert.

Was connected to an excellent VP player. Guy churned significant VP profits over time.

A few basic ideas:
1) FPDW was the best VP game. In chat I asked Advantage Play wizard James Grosjean: "Will casinos remove the >100% Return games (specifically FPDW)?"
...James answered "Yes." And this was years ago.
...Casinos don't like giving away value. Especially when fish will donate to any payout table.
2) If you break down a casino floor to Profit per Square Foot, I'm sure the Slots grade out highest. People play em, and they don't care about the odds.
3) To your original point, Yes. The Royal is a huge % of the Gross payout but it hits infrequently. So, low Frequency but high value went it lands.
...On FPDW, Royal paid out 800 units on a 1-unit bet.

...WITHOUT the Royal, Gross Return is well below 100-cents on the dollar.
...When you include the Royal, it was a +EV game. And yes, it took a while to nail the Royal.

ROYALS FACTORED INTO OVERALL PAYBACK

For simplicity, consider ROYALS 2% of payback(varies slightly different games)

THUS, if one plays a 101%+EV game (perfect strategy) and never hit a Royal, game would return roughly 99% ON PAPER (meaning luck bad or luck will determine overall percenage payback, but longer one plays, results closer to 99% or 101% with royal will be attained.

This with perfect strategy played^

You bet, Slick. I'll suffice my thoughts in a few sentences:

1) When FPDW was available in Vegas, the BEST player could make a living on that game.
2) Of course, there were swings based on variance.
3) Only the BEST players could play it fast enough and at an error-rate that was low enough.

I know Video Poker generates a lot of board discussion. I'll leave that to the true VP experts who know the games.

This day and age need to do promos, play progressives, or find errors made by casinos to make it worthwhile.

With chucky's example above, FPDW is now only availabe in quarter single line in Vegas, which is worth less than $10 an hour.

Yes, and in the end often the most worthwhile part of it becomes the casino loyalty rewards as part of the grind.

I know those who spend a lot of time in Nevada for very cheap because of video poker play.

I found a particular slot machine that would kick out a voucher ticket occasionally just at random with different amounts. My guess it was spitting out receipts from previous players in a delayed fashion that they had never received. This machine was there for many months before it was finally fixed.

It varied on the amounts...usually very small amounts but occasionally 50 to 100 bucks. I only visited this casino every so often but almost always received a small gift.
Amazing to me that customers didn't complain or slot attendants didn't notice the malfunction for such a long time. I don't have many talents but one thing I do is observe well and pick up on irregularities.
