Whilst browsing the Rudy saga thread some comments were made regarding the English language....
It struck me as an interesting question to ask, and I intend to look into this a bit.
How far back in time could we go and still be able to communicate in English with people.
We've all read (well some of us anyway) proper English from, say, the Victorian era, then there's Olde English (not the Poster breakfast version) of the Enlightenment, then there's Shakespeare English, the Lordes English following the demise of the Norman rulers...that takes us to about 1200....but could we actually understand that English & speak it?
Thoughts?
