Wow! This is not good.

"South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol declares emergency martial law, accusing the opposition of paralyzing the government and sympathizing with North Korea. The opposition claims this move is a tactic to sidestep impeachment, deepening political polarization and raising concerns about democratic stability. "

With the ouster of Biden and Trump focused on immigration and Russia amongst other things like immigration - he saw an opportunity to avoid impeachment knowing the world superpower won’t step in.

US is stretched thin and can’t jeopardize getting involved in a THIRD political war - so we will need to sit this one out and let our “friends” handle it.

How long until N Korea sees an opportunity to kick up a little shit and get into good graces with Trump by “negotiating” peace shortly after starting a little conflict. They know they can’t win the long game - but they also know we can’t respond quickly and short of pissing off China by fully escalating hostilities - they will take a cheap shot where they can.

Likely nothing.

Think of it like Haiti and their situation. The all inclusive resorts continue as normal and the cruise lines still stop for the most part. The cruises re rerouted for a few weeks from memory - but the fact their government was in complete turmoil didn’t effect the “touristy” parts - few that they are.

Same with embassies - non essentials may be recalled and some countries may pull people as a political show - but doubtful any fully close. Just an “advisory” made and more BS.

US won’t be rushing into assist for a multitude of reasons. Not the least is fear of pissing off the Chinese with the whole tariff thing already. Why show up acting like we control Asia too and pissing off China by putting boats in the S Yellow Sea ?

Likely - another example would be the US following January 6th.

How many countries did anything against us ? Granted not as big of a move as declaring Martial Law - but what in essence is a political fight that just stepped up a notch with one party threatening anyone affiliated with the other of jail.

Unless they start something with the day to day citizen and not just political opposition - no one is really going to notice outside of the media outlets.

"I declare martial law in order to eradicate the shameless pro-North Korea anti-state forces that are plundering the freedom and happiness of our people and to protect the free constitutional order," Yoon said, as quoted by ABC News editorial partner KBS.

If what he says is true, then maybe he’s right

Sounds like his opposition may be the equivalent of what we’ve been fighting the last 4 years in the U.S.

But just speculating as I don’t know enough about it yet….

I highly doubt you’re going to find many North Korea sympathizers in South Korea.

You’re taking a country whose population found itself forced into a division that split families just after the end of WW II.

The general population didn’t want to divide - it was simply a result of the Japanese occupation and when they lost - the fact you had 2 different types of government ready to prop up their leaders just like Germany.

Saying you support N Korea would be in effect saying you support a nation your government has been at war with since 1948. Of course pointing fingers and accusing your opponent of being “unpatriotic” makes people stop questioning you about YOUR past patriotism- or at least that’s what seems to be the blueprint of the plan used today.

Yoon be screwed now. With the parliment and his cabinet voting to stop the Martial Law he has had to back down.

I can't see how he continues as Prez after this fiasco. People are in the streets protesting.
