$10k/mo. is probably a good number to average for the US but there are areas that people could live on half that and have a good life.

We've looked at retiring in central america. You can live on $3-4k/mo very comfortably down there.
Some retire and live on $2k/mo..

The amount needed depends on where you live. $10k/mo in NY City or Cali would put you in poverty class.
