Explain reasonably why Bibee is NOT the winning pitcher of record in yesterday’s nDetroit/Cleveland game - solely because he started and ONLY pitched 4 2/3 scoreless innings and exited with a 4-0 lead.

Instead the reliever who comes in to replace him gets credited with the win.

Outdated rule - the days of starters going 6-7 or more every game - especially in playoffs is over.

Rule needs changed to simply require a “quality start” in the eyes of the official scorer if does not meet the 5 inning requirement. Probably cost some prop bettors a win yesterday. I get a guy comes out in a bullpen game throws a scoreless 1st and then gets pulled before the 2nd with a lead not being the winner - but this is not that.

These short series - it’s a tricky situation. Dominant starter can pitch again for you if needed if you don’t over use them - but letting them go deep might eliminate the need.

I happen to still like the rule. It’s very simple pitcher has to pitch the majority of the game to get credit for a decision.

isn’t a majority of the game 4.5 innings ?

He pitched 4 2/3 and didn’t get the credit.

I get what you’re saying - just saying there should be exceptions for cases like this - obviously a guy pitching an inning or 2 -no. But pitch say 4 1-3 and get caught in a long rain delay so someone else takes over - their needs to be a way to record the quality start ruined by a delay.

Yeah technically you have a point that would be majority.

Got to go 5 innings.

This^^^.

There has to be a cut off. A pitcher can't come in, pitch the first inning, get a 3 run lead, then leave the game and get the win.

The pitcher and manager know the rules and if the pitcher could have stayed another 1/3 inning, that pithcer could have protected his stat.

It's pretty simple.

Now you can argue 4 innings, 1/3, 2/3 inning, etc but the rule is 5 innings and is there really a reason to change that?

No, there doesn't.

What if they decide to record it at 4 innings, instead of 5.

But 3 2/3s innings in, there's a delay.

A line has to be drawn somewhere and it has been drawn.

I would be against changing that line as it will lead to more problems than you think it will solve.

That’s why you keep the 5 and add an exception of “If in the official scorer discretion” to the rule.

Preserves the 5 inning requirement - but gives the scorer leaway too.

Scoring is never black and white in baseball - lots of should be errors not charged and some questionable errors charged every year for example.
