Everyone will be wearing #42 in their games tonight. Respect to this man for breaking the barrier.

I'm wondering if MLB's exemption from the Sherman Antitrust Act, which allows it to function as a monopoly, will be challenged since, celebrating JR day flies in the face of anti-DEI initiatives.
Wonder if Trump and Musk will be attending any Jackie tributes today?

Again - he dealt with a fair amount of shit in his day - but let’s keep things in context.

The whole idea that 42 was the first black man to be allowed to play pro ball is wrong. Segregation became much more of a thing in the depression. There were plenty of whites playing on barnstorming teams through the depression too.

And there were plenty of black players signed and preparing to make the move to the bigs. Ultimately - fans were accepting (as attitudes towards racial division changed following WW2) and more importantly owners saw black players as cheap labor who could provide an alternative and depress the growing salaries of white players by presenting a viable alternative at a lesser cost.

This is confusing.

So you're saying Jackie Robinson wasn't he first african american to play in pro-baseball, which is viewed by the majority of people as the majors?

Sure there were other pro "leagues" but nothing compared to the top league. We all know there was a pro-aftrican american league as well. But, the whole idea was he was the first to play on a top-tier major league team in which african-americans were not a part of before him.

Jackie is the first “official” player of black ancestory to play MLB.

Of course no one actually conducted research on the matter in the games early days either. And he was definitely not the first “minority” MLB’er - for example Louis Sockalexis who the Indians were named after played long before.

There were also plenty of “light skinned” players before too - Luis Castro is credited as the first Latin born player.
