It’s not a note for not rip off - but given the “similarities” of a song that was a. Released just 18 months or so before Stairway was written and b. Played by a band who opened for Zeppelin on several dates - playing this song nightly - the liberties taken with “borrowing” are a little too great to ignore.
Never mind Page has a long history of taking bits and pieces (and more) from long dead musicians, speeding them up a bit and cleaning them up and calling them his own. He knew damn well what he did (even if unknowingly in his subconscious) and should have at least made it right with Randy. But being the ultimate cheapskate, having Peter Grant as a manager and Atlantics legal team at your disposal has its advantages I guess.
I still love Zep and Page and all they did - but this one was blatant theft.
Somehow I don't remember anything about this. Love Spirit very underrated too and still love most of Zeppelins stuff. STH is one of my least favorite songs(so overplayed). Same goes for Claptons Layla and even Stones Satisfaction (I know...blasphemyFound the video with comparison of the intro’s.
