Unless the worm's goal is to be eaten, the phrase "the early bird gets the worm" pretty much implies it doesn't work out for the worm.

But who cares? This is about the bird succeeding.

Let's not overthink it.

In gambling, sometimes the early bird gets the worm, but sometimes, actually more often, it helps to be patient.

The early bird is not patient.

But patience is a virtue in gambling. Only when you've been patient through days and then strike early one morning are you being the early bird that gets the worm.

Otherwise, the early bird starts out in the hole and tries to get bailed out; which might not happen until the following morning.
