Am I the a$$hole in this situation? Probably but, would like other peoples take on the situation.

While traveling yesterday, we stop at a QuickTrip (think WaWa, 7-11 type convience store) and I buy a large drink 44oz. for the road trip. I go to the counter to pay and the clerk tells me its $4.02. I ask her "For this drink?". She says pretty adamently, "Yes". I said that can't be right, and the guy behind me says she's not charging me right.

So, I ask her to check again and she said $4.02 again, this time in a huffy mood. I point to the fountain drinks where is says the price is $1.79. She says, "Oh yeah, my mistake". I pay her and she gives me my change and I leave. We start to leave the parking lot and I hand my wife the change (still wadded up in my hand). I look and the clerk had messed up on the change. Instead of giving me change for the $5 I handed her, she had given me change for $10.

The wife mentions, she's going to be in trouble when they count down her drawer at the end of shift. I said, too damn bad. She's trying to rip people off. So we continued to leave without going back in and return the $5.

AITA?

We all know you're a good person, Tank. If only she treated you right.

I know some people will be "righteous" in their answers, but the bottom line is, treat people with respect, so you'll also get respected. I hope the girl will not do that to other customers.

Actually, I thought about this a little.

Since she's clearly overcharging customers on purpsoe, she's probably skimming the register so I doubt the $5 would be the problem.
Did she do it on purpose? Or was it a mistake she corrected?

Your story indicates she corrected her mistake, in which case, she didn't do it on purpose.

Whereas your actions were absolutely done on purpose.

Thanks Genie.
I don't mind being an a$$ to people who deserve it. :)

I think the tone of her reaction when asks about the price pretty much suggests that she's doing it on purpose. The normal reaction when committing a mistake is that you'll be apologetic to the customer. Also, very impossible that she doesn't know the correct price for working there for who knows how long.

If you don’t know the price of things you have to ring up dozens hourly or how to make change you have no business being a cashier.

She appeared to do it on purpose. I asked twice about the price and she was adament she was right.
How could a clerk who see hundreds of people each day buy these drinks for $1.79 think $4.02 (200% higher) is suddenly correct? It clearly wasn't a mistake, I'm thinking she was trying to skim some money.

If it had been an honest mistake, the clerk would have said, "Oh you're right" after the first time I asked her about the price. Instead her response was even more forceful, saying it was $4.02 again.

She clearly was not an honest person. The guy behind me stated as much.

So the question I'm really asking really, if the clerk was stealing from customers by overcharging them, AITA for getting too much change back? Probably.

I kind of see it as taking money from a thief. Sure I'm in the same boat as her now but mine action was not premeditated and would have required me to exit from the interstate several miles down the road to return the money.

I'm probably still an a$$hole anyway... :ROFLMAO:

Ask her for a loan. Tell her you dont care at all what she thinks of you and you never will. Then if she doesnt give you the loan think about trashing the place. Think, get sober and maybe just do it

Sure seems like she was doing this deliberately and pocketing the extra. so she is part of that world and in that world, everyone knows the stakes so she isn't a victim there.

So there is no wrong doing here, she got as good as she was giving. so be it

Working at a QT on Christmas Day probably the most miserable person imaginable or the least interesting (possibly both).

Yea - any one with common sense knows a fountain drink isn’t $4 freaking dollars.

As to her “getting in trouble” - what’s the worst they do - fire her and have to work New Years themselves - I don’t see that happening. These places pretty much let ANYTHING slide just to keep a warm body in the store.

Those counter people at the register go by what the scanner tells them what the price is.

If the scanner said $4.02 then they have to by that. Unless someone points out a mistake.
