Why do you think you see a DraftKings commercial on TV every 30 seconds every NFL game ?
It’s a whole lot easier to make money off 1000 $10 parlay players than it is to profit from a guy betting 10k a game.
Average player loses $100 a week - he goes back to work - makes $1000 more and repeats next week - does it all season going to win big one week and recover his losses from the previous 10.
10k a game player loses 2 weeks in a row - he’s either jumping off a bridge or living under it.
For the average player - parlay is the way to go. Gambling comes in steaks - you win 3 lose 2 - lose 3 win 2. The only squares who manage to win are playing 3 teamers. When they win - they make 5x the money - when they lose they only lose a single.
Same reason why books offer free play and players jump at it - cash is only useful when your betting ML faves - freeplay much more appealing to parlay players - which is exactly the kind of action a book loves (high risk / reward - counts little against the RO requirement giving them more chances to bust you).
Always remember though - as fun as it is to knock the losers - gambling is pari-mutual.
You can’t win long term unless someone else is losing. Bookmakers simply take a vig long term. They might sustain short term losses on a market - but there goal is to equalize action and take a cut for acting as middleman.
Losers playing parlays only ensure an effective market for legit gamblers. So public loses parlays in mass - it just ensures a softer market for the sharp to bet into. If the public was winning long term - shops would be tighter on their lines and bonuses. When they lose - books can become more generous as a rising tide lifts all boats.
Odds only suck because people are too uneducated to realize that they are getting ripped off.
Same logic allows casinos to offer 6:5 blackjack at a $5 table.
Casino says we can’t make money with “low level gamblers” - then proceeds to pay 6:5 to stupid bettors who will play because it’s a low level table and they accept whatever shitty odds the casino gives.
State lotteries are another great example - if you opened a casino and advertised 55% payouts - people would laugh their ass off at you and call you a crook. Look what pick 3/4 and scratchers pay out though. Or go on a cruise ship and gamble - another great example of crowd stupidity and accepting the “entertainment” value of gambling. I myself never have found losing “entertaining” - play to win or do something else with your money that makes you happy.
yeah CK I am an entertainment guy small time bettor. Do like the action on a disposable income level. I understand what players are saying in this thread. Talked with a friend today who said he makes about 8 football plays a year. real discerning. Not me on that level. That is why I do favor the contests that you have been running here at BMR. and those found across the street in other forums. . THX.
That is not surprising. The public loves a story like that so the more the books can push it the more new members they will get which the majority will probably lose
