Vaguely remember this case.

Remember - this was around the time of Adam and kidnappings were big news stories - so the networks ran with them. Had everyone convinced there was like a 1/4 chance your child WOULD be abducted in the US - and if they weren’t they probably would either get Aids, fighting a USSR invasion or wind up starving in Africa. Seriously - that’s like literally all you heard about in the mid 80s.

But as they say - not all hero’s wear capes. Dude took the law into his own hands and dealt with the problem. No remorse and got a fair sentence.
