The impact craters are the result of the fall of the angels. Divine power so great they scarred the earth permanently.
Each crater marks the location site of the impact where the angel fell.
I think there's a more than good chance the craters themselves are seals or prisons for these beinga.
Over time, these places could become places of mystery or supernatural energy.
