One of them was found dead in his basement by his mother who held him in her arms while the ambulance was on it's way.

So I learned a lesson very young.

But cigars and alcohol was another story for me.

It's fukkin tough going through something like that.

Especially when you're very young like I was.

But that was South Philly back in the day. We didn't give two fukks.

I grew up in a corner in South Philly across the street from a public school. Filled with shines.

Every day, upon walking home from my school, which was Catholic, there would be no less than 100 old heads on the corner throwing empty bottles of beer at the shines as they left the school.

You should have seen it to believe it. Never saw so many shines ccompletely terrified like that before or since.

They would run as soon as school got out.

One day, a bunch of Puerto Ricans came into the neighborhood to play baseball against my neighborhood youth team.

My neighborhood was beautiful, spotless. We had our own baseball field to play on.

So they came down to play on our field. My buddy, Franny, his little brother, David, was on that youth team.

So the Puerto Ricans came down to play, and after the game was over, one of them decided to start a fight with David.

When my buddy Franny found out, he called me and told me what happened. I said I'll be right there.

Went to his house and we went to find the Puerto Rican who fought his brother.

We find him, and Franny just saw red and grabbed the dude, and threw him through an alley door breaking the door.

Franny fukked him up so bad all I could do was laugh and grab Franny off of him.

Turns out the dude Franny fukked up had an older brother, too.

And this dude when he found out what Franny did to his little brother, came down into our neighborhood with over 30 of his Puerto Rican friends looking for Franny.

Well, Franny wasn't around then, because he went to the hospital to see his brother who was getting stitches.

But guess who was around?

Yours truly and my buddy Brian.

Brian came out of his house and handed me a baseball bat and he had one for himself.

So the dude comes down with over 30 of his boys, and it's me and Brian standing against them in the street.

The dude looked at us and couldn't believe it. I'll never forget this...

First words out of his mouth was "Where's the dude who fukked my brother up?"

I said where the fukk do you think he is?

At that, the dude says I'm not playing, where's the dude?

Brian says where the fukk do you think he is?

Meanwhile, his boys are just standing around not doing or saying shit.

I said dude did you come here to fight or talk? Make a move.

At that, Brian raises his bat and says make a fukkin move or get the fukk out of here.

Meanwhile , the whole neighborhood is watching form the windows waiting to see what's next.

The dude says mother fukker I'll be back this ain't over and made a move to leave.

I said we'll be waiting for you bitches whenever you want it.

Then they just left.

That story has since become legend in South Philly history.

The day when 2 stood against many.

Whenever I see Brian now he reminds of it and we have a drink and a laugh.

That was old time South Philly.
